Marinette POV

Relief washed over my whole body as I finally swung into my room and transformed. Fighting akums alone was far more difficult than I ever could have expected. Of course, when things start to get too out of hand, I can always count on Alya or Nino to pick up some of my slack. But when I'm facing the same villain for the fifth time in one week, there's really no point in wasting their time. Besides, while they refuse to admit it, I know that they are just as upset by Adrian absence as I am.

I finally let out a long breath that I'd been keeping in for a while, my hands going to my shoulders in attempts to rub out some of the tension. Tikki had taken her break to dig through my purse, finding the stash of macarons I kept for her. A soft smile managed it's way to my lips, and my eyes glanced toward my plush bed. Every bone in my body ached from the sight of it, but I knew that I had no time to rest. Reaching for my phone, I pulled it from my pocket, checking my text messages I knew I had missed.

Of course she'd be worried, I was twenty minutes late to a meetup I planned with her. But with me, what's new? If it weren't for the magic of the miraculous keeping my identity so hidden, I'm sure she would have interrogated me ages ago. I sent her a quick text with some vague excuse, an apology, and a promise that I was on my way, before heading downstairs. My parents voices drifted through the air, a hushed argument taking place between them. My dad wasn't too thrilled on my recent behavior, my mom however, choose to blame it on recent events. I didn't really care at the moment what either of them thought.

"Mom!" I called before I reached the living room, stopping the discussion quickly. "Alya and Nino have made some plans to get me out of the house, but I should be back in a few hours. Is that okay?" Of course she agreed. She would agree to anything right now, ever since Adrian left. She believes that what's upsetting me so much. It hurt to have to lie to her, so I don't even try to correct it. Whatever she wants to believe isn't the problem, I'm not gonna stop her.

"Be careful Sweetheart... We love you" she replied, giving me a weak smile. Forcing one myself, I told both of my parents goodbye before darting out of the house.

Once I crossed the street, I heard a small voice peep from my bag.

"This will be good for you Marinette. I know it was upsetting for you, how he left. But it's only for school year, then he'll back!" Tikki stated, attempted to stop me from pouting.

"Yeah, I know Tikki, but even when he does come back, things wont be like they use to. I mean he ran off to America right after I told him I was Ladybug. Then he gave me the ring, saying he didn't want it anymore. Without him, without Chat, it's just hard. It hurts" my voice cracked, causing me to cringe. My phone vibrated in my pocket, pulling me from my thoughts. I checked it quickly, to see a text from Alya, asking me how close I was. Quickly I typed a response, and of course ran into someone while doing it. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry...Master Fu?" The short grey haired man held a somber expression, something I rarely saw on him. Tucked carefully under his arm, I could see a large bag. Without a word, I search the surroundings, before pulling us into a nearby alleyway. Before I could ask him what he was doing, he pulled a small black box from the bag, handing it to me. It was a Miraculous Box, that much I could tell. Taking it, I slowly pulled the lid open, seeing Chat Noir's ring. Plagg, the cat kwami began to make his way out of the box, but before he could utter a word, I slammed it closed, shoving it back toward Master Fu.

"Marinette, I know you don't want it to be true, but Adrien is gone. He has given up his miraculous and someone needs to take his place. I am entrusting you to choose your next partner, the next Chat Noir" he explained.

"No!" I said, a little too harshly. "No, I don't want another Chat Noir. I want you to take this, and if you happen to come across someone half as extraordinary as he was, give it to them. But I won't be a part of it. I refuse to go through that again. I won't make that mistake twice" I could feel the tears pricking the corners of my eyes, but I refused to let them go.

"Very well then" Master Fu gently took the box from my hand. Leaving the ally, and me alone in it. Looking to my phone, I rewrote my text to Alya, telling her I'd be a while. Before dropping to my knees and finally letting out the sob that had been building in my chest.
