The first week of classes went about as well as I expected. The courses felt long, and the homework was obnoxious. I anticipated it would only get more difficult as college went on. I was managing to keep up so far, but I had to write everything down in my planner and keep post-it notes on my desk reminding me to get things done. I found if I didn't get the work done as soon as possible, I was much more likely to wait till the last possible second. That never worked out well.
It was finally the weekend, and I was excited to get to spend some time with Elena. The feisty brunette and I were going to spend a few hours at her dorm watching Netflix. She was lucky and had managed to score a single room with no roommate. I was looking forward to being able to relax and not have to think about equations or historical dates for a few hours.
I was set to meet Elena at her dorm at 9:00 a.m. At about 8:30, my phone rang and woke me out of sleep. I had forgotten to set an alarm. I answered the phone groggily, silently thanking whoever was on the other line for waking me up on time.
"Did you just get up, sleepyhead?" chirped a voice from the other end.
The voice brought a smile to my face. "Bailey!"
"Dani!"
"I'm so glad to hear from you. How has your first week of college been?"
"Stressful. There is so much to do already."
"I'm with you there. Made any new friends?"
"Not as of yet. You?"
"I stumbled into a friendship with this girl named Elena. I think we are going to be good friends."
"Just don't let her replace me, okay? I will forever hold the place as your best friend."
"Of course, Bales. Elena will never replace you."
"Got any fun plans for your first college Saturday?"
"I'm actually about to head over to hang out with Elena. We are going to binge-watch some ridiculous comedy."
"Sounds like fun. I think I might go to this party one of the sororities is having tonight. Maybe I'll meet some people."
"Just be careful, okay. And don't drink if you're going alone."
"Okay, mom."
"Goodbye, Bailey."
"Bye, Dani."
I hung up the phone and rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Bailey was a terrific friend, but she couldn't be any more different than me. Where I was introverted, she was extroverted. She loved parties, and I hated them. Bailey had dated several guys in high school, and I still hadn't had a boyfriend. We balanced each other out.
I climbed out of bed and threw on some sweats. Chelsea was nowhere to be seen. She always seemed to disappear from the room early in the morning. I made myself semi-presentable and made the trek over to Elena's building.
When I arrived, someone was leaving, so I was able to get into the building. I headed to Elena's room and knocked on the door. I heard rustling coming from inside, and the door was opened to reveal a bleary faced Elena, who was still in her pajamas. I stifled a laugh, knowing the exact same thing had happened to me earlier. She gestured for me to come in, so I walked past her and sat on her futon.
"I overslept," she said.
"So did I."
"Just give me a couple of minutes to make some coffee, and I'll be right with you."
She headed over to her single-serve coffee maker and began making some caffeinated goodness. I glanced around the room and was jealous of all the space she had. Stupid Chelsea took up seventy percent of the room.
