The deafening thud of Castiel's dead body hitting the floor rang in Dean's ears. His first reaction was to drop to the ground next to his now dead lover's body but he quickly realized that instead he needs to kill the bastard who dared lay a hand on Cas. Sam read his mind and held him back from going toe to toe with the actual devil. "Sam..!" Dean warned on the verge of a sob that was on it's way of escaping much to his dismay.
Seeing her oldest child so close to breaking down further encouraged her to do it herself. Sam, not being able to also hold her back seeing as he only has two arms shouted after her. The fierce female Winchester did what they all wanted to do and repeatedly punched the forked tongued asshole who just killed the love of Dean's life, and Sam's best friend in front of all of the remaining Winchesters.
Every punch Mary threw at Lucifer pushed them both closer to the portal, her final punch knocked him back into the portal. Before he had a chance to completely go through the portal he grabbed her jacket and yanked her in with him. The portal closed up after them, the orange disappearing into nothingness too quickly for either Winchester to go after their mother.
Sam and Dean stood there in shock, Sam let go of Dean and ran to where the portal was and Dean now free of his younger brothers hold ran and dropped down next to Cas' body. The older Winchester looked at the face of Castiel, silent tears rolling down his blotchy, tear stained cheeks.
He kneeled there for god knows how long just staring at what used to be his lover when Sam gently lays his hand of his shoulder. Dean didn't jump, didn't even flinch, he just stayed kneeling on the hard dirt even though his knees were starting ache, and looked up at the sky letting out a heart wrenching scream.
"why? why him? huh you sick son of a bitch!?" He screamed hoarsely at the night sky, sobbing uncontrollably afterwards. He knows that he should get up sometime soon because he's been in this exact same spot for over an hour and he's way too old to be on his knees, hunched over for this long. And he knows that when he gets up its going to hurt like a bitch but he just can't find it within himself to get up just yet, he needs to be with Cas right now.
Sam, not used to his brother being so vocal about his feelings, is at a complete loss as to what to do. Cas would know what to do Sam thinks fleetingly. So he decides to try his best, and leans down hugging his brother. "C'mon Dean we gotta get you inside before you freeze to death or your back gives out." He whispers soothingly, gently tugging him up and away from the body.
Dean tenses up at the obvious move to pull him away from Cas and rips out of his brothers grip, leaning closer to Cas' body, not wanting to leave him alone. Sam sadly realizes that he's not gonna leave Cas' side so he sits down next to Dean. They sit in silence (excluding Dean's sniffling every few minutes) for at least half an hour. During that time Sam lets himself cry over the loss his best friend and mother that he had just started to get to know.
The light snores coming from Dean was Sam's opportunity to finally get them inside. Sam went to go pick him up before he saw that he had a death grip on Cas' trench coat and he knew he wasn't going to be able get Dean inside until Dean himself wanted to. A huge gush of wind blew in and practically rattled the youngest Winchester's bones. He unconsciously began moving towards the house, once he realized what he was doing he decided to just go into the house that he could guarantee was much warmer than outside and get some much needed shuteye.
Dean woke up aching in places he didn't know could ache ( ). He was cuddled up against a familiar body and he smiled for a second forgetting what had even occurred the night before, thinking it was just a nightmare. His smile dropped as quickly as it had appeared, finally feeling the cold slightly damp dirt underneath his body and the fact that the normally warm body he was curled up against was frighteningly cold.
He sits up on his ass, his heart heavy with the amount of pain he feels. Tears well up in his eyes without his permission, he angrily wipes them away and begins to stand up, groaning in physical pain whilst doing so. The oldest Winchester picks Cas' limp body up bridal style and makes his way to the house where Sam is presumably residing in.
