Extended Summary

Brett Talbot had been taught control since he was very young. When to choose a fight, and when to drop it. In fact, he had the confidence to say that he had absolute control over his temper.

But of course, his extensive training doesn't apply when in comes to matters that involve his sister. And as soon as he witnesses a few older students harrasing Lori, he doesn't hesitate to defend her. Things escalate. Fists fly and teeth are knocked off.

As a result, he's sentenced to three months worth of detention. After all, who could be the one to blame? Three kids with bruises painting their so-called innocent faces, or a jock with not a single scratch on his face?

Ellinor Denver was the head of Devenford Prep's school newspaper. Always keeping an eye out for gossip and interesting news, she's made for the job. And while running short on staff, the principal decides to change Brett Talbot's three month detention to one month of helping out the school newspaper. And at first, Ellinor doesn't mind the extra, but very reluctant help.

But gossip eventually grows old, and Ellinor is forced to find real news to stop the newspaper from being shut down. And suddenly, she's presented with a one in a lifetime opportunity: the mysteries that hide within the wholesome appearance of their beloved town. Like the amount of dead bodies that have been ruled out as "animal attacks".

Ellinor is determined to find the answer to all the questions that have been ignored for so long about Devenford. And to do so, she's forced to team up with the cocky and insufferable Brett Talbot.

And something tells her he knows a lot more than he claims.
