"We need to take you in to the police station for the murder of Valerie Fowler."
I stared at him in disbelief.
"What? Why? I didn't do anything!" I said, feeling panicky. Why are they taking me to the police station for something I haven't done? My mind still hasn't registered that my co-worker was murdered. I had never liked Valerie and have always been at loggerheads with her but I would never think of killing her, much less even murder anybody. The fact that someone murdered a person who I had connections with made my blood run cold.
"We have evidence against you, Miss Evans." The older cop responded, making a hand motion for the younger cop to go over to me.
The younger cop walked towards me with cuffs in his hands and on instinct I took a few steps back.
He followed.
"I swear I didn't do anything!" I struggled as he put my arms to my back and cuffed me. He pushed me roughly to the police car, giving a tight lip smile like he was trying to apologise.
"We will talk again soon, Mr Martin." The older officer nodded at him, heading to the driver seat and slamming the door shut.
I realised there was no point trying to fight back now, going into submission, I went into the back of the car. I hung my head down in shame, tears streaming down my cheeks freely. The younger officer shut the door and went into the car at the front, beside the older officer.
I was bawling my eyes out, feeling extremely humiliated and wronged. My co-workers all saw that. They saw how pathetic I was. How am I going to face them again?
I was afraid.
No, afraid isn't enough to describe how scared I was, I was petrified. My mind erupted into a bunch of endless possibilities that this situation might lead to.
What if I was charged guilty? For something that I have never done?
The trip in the car to the police station was silent. Silence had never felt so loud. It didn't help my mental state. I breathed in and out trying to calm myself down. I laid my head against the leather cushion, closing my eyes and falling asleep.
"Get up."
I felt someone lightly tapping my cheek. I slowly opened my eyes, my memory coming back to me. I was pulled out of the car and pushed into the building.
I felt the same panic rise in my chest from moments ago. My shoulders were starting to ache from being kept at the back. They lead me into a room.
"Cuff her to the chair, I will go get the documents. Stay in here." The older officer ordered, the younger officer nodded in response.
Chain me to what chair?
I was confused until I noticed a bench infront a desk with bars on both ends of it. The younger officer unlocked one of my cuffs and pulled me to the bench before locking it at the other end of the bar, forcing me to sit down.
Feeling my arms being freed from captivity, my body shifted uncomfortably, trying to relief the throbbing ache in my shoulders.
I stared at the desk infront of me, my mind blank.
There was an awkward silence between the officer in the room and I.
"I'm Austin." He said after awhile.
"Well, you already know my name, don't you?" I replied bitterly.
"I'm sorry for being so rough with you earlier on, it's my job." He said, giving friendliness another try.
I blinked, surprised at what he just said. Why is he treating me so well?
"I'm a -", he hesitated, sensing my discomfort, before saying, "a huge fan. I'm really happy to meet finally meet you, I mean really-but-it's really weird that I get to meet you, and-like it's weird under this circumstances but-yeah-oh god this is embarrassing." He continued, stuttering.
I smiled, amused by his behaviour. Why are we even having a normal conversation? I raised my head to meet his eyes.
He averted his eyes from me, as if he was shy.
I was greeted by his big brown eyes, his black hair was spiked up and his face was clean shaven. He looks younger than what I thought he was at the beginning.
"...I know you...didn't do it. We don't actually have concrete evidence against you. Don't worry, we will find you justice. I hope Emmett doesn't scare you. He's a tough nut but he's really kind deep down." He said slowly as if he was trying to watch what he's saying.
Probably so he won't get caught stuttering again.
I guessed that Emmett is the older officer.
"Emmett's just being an ass, because-" Austin stopped when the door swung open.
Emmett was at the door.
"Having a nice chat? Should I bring tea in?"
