I believed in fate

I believed in fate. Growing up in a church, it was engraved in me. Pressed into my soul until it became a true and honest belief.

Now, I lost faith in the parts where a mighty God granted me the one direct path to peace and salvation. Rather, I believed there were hundreds of paths, each with doors different in size. It was my job to walk down a road best suited for me. It was my choice to open a door.

Moving to the city, even against my parents' wishes, was a path. I took it.

Opening a door leading to Brian and his group of friends, was a choice. One I happily and lovingly accepted.

In seven months, my life took such a turn for the better. Sure the path I took had hurdles. No road was perfect. I was sure the path to Heaven had its cracks and debris, but I hung in there. Planted flowers along the way. I made it the best experience I could.

As I looked out the open window of Brian's bedroom-no, our bedroom-I had no regrets. If someone would've told me at the end of last year that I would've been on my own, found the love of my life, and was preparing to welcome my own family before the following next year ended, I would've called them a liar.

Then I probably would've hit them because Kay, the girl who just made cupcakes, wouldn't have been able to do any of that.

Looking down at my belly, not showing but knowingly there, I smiled. I could do it. And at this time, with the sun rising high in the sky, I felt like I could do anything in the world.

"Kay..."

Brian's voice made me turn, but I left my arms on the balcony railing. I watched as the man of my dreams walked into the connecting bedroom, shirtless, his boxers slightly visible at the top of his pajama pants. With the sunlight hitting the lines of his body in such a way I... I...

"Hi." I bit my lip.

Brian smiled and stepped out onto the balcony with me. His strong arms wrapped around me, his hand gently touching my stomach. With a sigh, he kissed the side of my neck.

I giggled. "Aren't you heading over to the coffee shop? You're not dressed yet."

Brian smiled as he lifted his head and looked into my eyes. Suddenly, I was lost in the golden specs within his.

"Jun called right now," he said.

Jun. My brother. Why would he call so early?

"Okay." I turned around, my back against the railing. Brian placed his arms on either side of me, locking me in place. With a small gulp, I looked up into his eyes. "What he say?"

Brian's smile weakened. For a moment, he looked at the sun behind me.

Dipping my head to the side, I tried to grab his attention. "Babe?"

The name pulled Brian back to me, but his smile didn't change. It remained weak with thought, as if he didn't want to say what the call was about.

Despite his obvious reluctance, he did. He pushed my curls behind my ear. "He said you need to call your mom. It's an emergency."

I gulped again. My eyes widened. "My mom..."

Brian nodded. "He said you two need to see her."

That feeling I had moments before, where I felt as if I could do anything and everything in this world, faded away with the sounds of the beach waves down below.

This is one thing I can't do.
