We're Here, We're Queer, and Filled with Existential Fear

"What are they doing?!? We do NOT need another useless democrat running the country. Trump has SAVED this land and he DESERVES to be re-elected in 2020." Jungkook's dad angrily rants.

Jungkook sighs as his dad goes on another political based rant. Right now, he was eating breakfast at the island in his kitchen, while his ever conservative parents watched the news in the living room.

"You're right," his mom continues, "All these radical democrats coming in are doing no good for anyone. Look at that new bill that Congress just passed. Gay people are allowed to be foster parents! How outrageous! That is no healthy environment for young children."

Jungkook has heard more than enough. He quickly finishes his bowl of cereal, and is out the door, waving a hasty goodbye to his parents.

He didn't understand what was so wrong with being gay, or even being a part of the LGBT+ community in general, but his parents talked about it like it was the worst thing anyone could be.

There's not much he can go off of through, he lives in an extremely religious community that, now that he thinks about it, it's not very diverse. Save for the few immigrant families like himself, the town was very small, and everyone knew everyone.

The walk to school is short, 10-15 minutes at most. The late September air was a bit breezy this time in the morning; Jungkook zips his jacket higher.

Jungkook is a sophomore, earlier in the month having his 16th birthday. As he walks through the halls to his locker, he can see people animatedly chatting away. His friend Jimin is nowhere in sight, so he stays quiet as he unpacks his books at his locker.

There's still no sight of Jimin when the second bell rings, so Jungkook heads to first hour without him.

Geometry is always extremely boring, but Jungkook overhears lots of gossip in that class. It's the only way he stays in the loop; by hearing everyone else talk.

Or, unless he hears it from Jimin.

Right when Jungkook sits down in his usual seat in the back, he can feel the room buzzing with excitement. Which, if he's being honest, is strange for being in geometry. Everyone is usually so deathly bored, the excited energy is dialed back a lot.

Today is not the case, however.

"Guys, did you hear about the new kid?!? I heard he's a foreigner."

"Really? Well I thought he's from America, he's just Chinese or something."

"Well I heard he was gay. Or wait no he might have two dads? I don't know"

"Since my parents work on the school board, yes, I can confirm he has two dads. They didn't tell me his name though, I just know it's a boy."

Jungkook is surprised by this. Could there really be a gay couple and their son moving to the area? And if he was Chinese then he could at least share his asian-ness with someone other than Jimin, because let's be honest here, Jimin doesn't count.

As excited as Jungkook is about this information, he knows to take it with a grain of salt, because these were just rumors, and with the way his grade gossips, he knows this could all be false.

The chatter is abruptly cut off by his math teacher telling them to be quiet and to face the board in the front.

Some kid throws a pencil across the room hitting another student. This instantly starts the teacher off into a rant about respect.

Jungkook knew he had not just a long day ahead of him, but a long year.

A week goes by. No sign of this mysterious new kid everyone just loves to talk about. The weekend comes and goes, spent by Jungkook's parents forcing him to study, and to not be a failure like his brother that had graduated two years ago, but had decided to take a gap year before he went to college.
