Your job at the small, hole-in-the-wall diner that your friend Hoseok ran was probably the best you'd ever had. You had been best friends with Hoseok for years, nearly since birth. Due to that, he was extremely understanding when you had to take time off for your health, or a family issue.
So when you went to dump people's leftovers and heard a soft squeak from the dumpster out back, you already knew you'd have to take time off. You set the bin of food down on the ground, bracing yourself and digging around in the dumpster. You heard the noise towards the left of the dumpster so you redirected your efforts there, finally feeling a movement underneath an old newspaper. You reached underneath the paper, pulling out what looked like a-
Oh. A little black bunny, though you weren't sure whether he was really black for all the grime coating him. His eyes were big and scared, nose twitching as he squirmed, trying to free himself from your hands. You gripped him firmly, slipping back inside the back door and whispering Hoseok's name, concealing the bunny behind your back from the rest of the staff.
You ushered Hoseok outside, presenting him with the little bunny in your arms. He cooed, reaching out to stroke the little creature between the ears. The bunny squeaked, cowering away from Hoseok's approaching hand. Hoseok pouted, looking up at you with worried eyes.
"Where did you find him?"
"Just there, in the dumpster! All alone, covered in so much dirt, Hoseok, what do we do?"
"Take him home! Take him home, clean him up and feed him! We've got carrots in the fridge, here." Hoseok made to go back inside but you grabbed his arm.
"Hoseok, rabbits don't really eat carrots, at least not only carrots. It's not a good diet for them. How about some lettuce?"
"Yeah, we have that too. Come on, I'll give you some of both."
"I can't go back in there with him, the staff are gonna freak out, he's a mess. Just bring me stuff here, and will you grab my bag? Clock me out?" Hoseok nodded, dashing back inside and nearly crashing into one of the waiters. You stroked over the bunny's ears, shushing him when he continued squeaking. His little limbs got tired soon and he stopped struggling, instead slumping in your hands.
Hoseok brought out your bag, lettuce and carrots stuffed in the front. You thanked him, setting off for your small house that was just down the street. You had trouble getting your keys out of your bag and into the door while still holding the bunny, but you managed, kicking the door closed and tentatively setting the animal on your counter.
The bunny scrambled for an exit the second you let him go, but you quickly grabbed a hold of him again, shushing his squeals. You stroked your hand over his head, waiting until he was perfectly calm and open to your touch before setting him down, though still petting him.
"It's okay love, I'm not gonna hurt you. Come on, let's get you some food, yeah?" You reached into your bag, grabbing a piece of lettuce. You tore off a small piece, holding it out to him in your hand. He moved forwards slowly, tentatively eating the lettuce out of your hand. You cooed, feeding him a tiny bite of carrot next. He crunched on it, flopping over to lay down on the counter while he did so.
You pet down his back while he ate, feeding him a few more bites of lettuce and carrots before picking him up.
"Let's get you a bath, okay love?"
You set him in the sink, warming up the water in the other side. You got some shampoo, gently lathering it into his fur. He was trembling slightly and you felt so bad, but you had to get him clean. You rinsed out the shampoo, grabbing a dish towel and scooping him up in it. You sort of swaddled him, rubbing all the water out of the little bunny's fur. You set him on the counter again, rubbing the water out of his ears. He relaxed in your arms, letting himself slump over with his head resting on your arm. You fed him a bit more lettuce, smiling adoringly at the way that his little nose twitched or the way that his jaw moved in circular motions.
It was late at night and you thanked god that your old roommate had kept a guinea pig, forgetting to take the cage when he left. You grabbed it, promising the little bunny that you'd get him a proper sized cage tomorrow. You tucked him into a makeshift bed, pressing a little kiss to the fur between his ears. He pawed at the cage door once you closed it, little whines tearing at your heart.
"I.. I can't- I can't take you with me to bed! You have to stay in here, please don't do this to me. I have to go to bed, that's your bed there." You pointed to the little bed that you'd made, reaching your finger in the cage to stroke over his muzzle.
He leaned his head into your hand, nearly squeezing his head through the bars. You opened the cage door with a sigh, letting him hop into your arms. You cradled him close to your face, retreating back to your bedroom. You set him on the bed gently, changing quickly in the closet and brushing your teeth before sliding into bed, letting the bunny curl up beside your head. He nuzzled his nose into yours, laying right on your pillow. You drifted off to sleep, unconscious mind not registering when the bed dipped suddenly beside you with much more than the weight of the little bunny, and a pair of arms pulled you into a warm body.
