Congratulations Maya", said my Best friend Emily on the phone.
She was the first person I called after hearing what my boss has just told me. For years I've been waiting for this moment and I could not believe my eyes.I am a famous journalist. At least not yet. I have been waiting for a chance to become one of the greatest journalist ever.Just like my idol
William Randolph and today was just that day.It began as a regular day. Woke up, took a shower, put on my office clothes and headed down to my favorite coffee shop down the street from my apartment. As usual, I was late to work because New York's traffic wasn't in my favor again.
"Miss williams!" , my boss yelled as I entered the building from all the across the hall where her office was.
"Here we go again", I thought in my head while I was running as fast as I can in my work clothes ignoring all the stares."Late again Miss Williams. Was there a lot of traffic again?" She asked as she stood from her chair and walked towards me.
" I'm sorry ma'am, it won't happen again" I said trying to sound as apologetic as I could.
"Let it not happen again", she said sounding so disappointed.
"Apart from that, today I have a proposal for you. One of my good friends from Seoul Korea has asked me to send one of my journalist to write about life in Korea as a foreigner. Now, I went over my options and decided that I should send you Miss Williams because well, I won't have to see your face for some time" she said with no emotion on her face.
"WAIT, WHAT!!!" I screamed that all the people in the building probably heard me. But still, I could not believe what I just heard. My boss has picked me Maya Williams to go to Korea .
It's not that I'm not a good journalist, it's just that every time I have an idea for an article, it always gets declined. This was my chance to finally make a name in the industry and prove to everyone that I have what it takes.
"Oh my God! Of course I will go ma'am. Thank you so much for picking me and I promise I won't disappoint you." I said as I took the proposal papers and signed them.
" you will be leaving in a week so take the rest of the week off. Make sure you read all the papers and pack your stuff. You will be gone for 4 months. " she said as she handed me the papers and my plane ticket.
"Thank you so much ma'am" I replied and left the office.
As I got in the hall, most of the coworkers' faces were a mixture of confusion and happiness. As I headed to my desk, my friend Amy approached me.
"What was that all about" she asked.
" Girl, the witch just have me a proposal to go to Korea and work" I said.
Yes you heard me right I said "Witch". It's not to be mean but that's what me and Amy cal her.
"Oh my God! Congrats babe. I can't believe it." She said as she was. teaching in for a hug.
Amy has been my friend ever since I started working at this company 3 years ago. She was so supportive of me and was the one who helped me know my way around the company. She has published a couple of famous articles and is well known in the city. I admit that I've always been jealous of her but she's always nice to me and others.
I packed all my stuff at my desk and called an uber. Everyone was waving goodbye at me and Amy walked me all the way to the car.
"I will miss you Maya. Take care of yourself out there and if by any chance you see BTS, my sure you get an autograph and a picture. Okay??" She said with a little tear in her eye.
"Don't cry. You know I got you. I will miss you too. You know I will be back in a few months. Also don't forget to tell me about your date with Carlos this weekend. Alright?" I said and have her one last long hug.
I closed the doors to the uber and waved good bye one last time. This all still felt like a dream to me. Why me all of the sudden? Has God finally answered my prayers? I had so many questions I needed answered but I was glad it was me.
I got home and called my Best friend Emily to tell her the good news. Emily and I have known each other since 5th grade. She is a dentist and has a husband and 2 kids. We went separate ways when we went to college and somehow we met again. Call it fate huh??
I decided to go visit my family which lives 34 minutes away from my apartment. I moved out of my parents house because I just needed to get away for all the memories I had in that place and start a new life. I made sure I cleaned and packed all my stuff on that same Monday and decided to go visit my family for the rest of the week. There were a lot of memories that I had while I arrived at the front door. To be honest, this house bring back painful memories that I never imagined to ever remember.
