Kate's eyes stared at the brunette in front of her as if she was an alien who had just landed in the middle of the party. The girl kept her eyes low and didn't dare start a conversation with anybody in the group. If they hadn't been introduced, Kate wouldn't have had been aware of her presence at all.
The boys joined them again after the ceremony. Luca assumed an automatic position next to Kate with one arm around her waist. He might have graduated top in his class, but the current Conjuring teacher was not the smartest when it came to relationships. His constant insecurities and jealousy made her feel trapped from time to time.
Next to him, D.C. happily conversed with her own mentee, Noelle. The first-year girl's personality, and her fiery hair, fit perfectly with Kate's friends. Noelle was very open and not afraid to ask questions. She was full of life and overly excited to join their group and the Corvus order. Even Hugo found the new fresh blood interesting.
Iryn walked past the group while Kate was lost in her own thoughts, but her eyes were quick to recognize her. Kate untangled herself from Luca and followed the teacher. When she caught up with the woman, she called her name.
"Enjoying the night?" Iryn asked as she stopped, her hands were both full with two red cups.
"Yes... can I ask you something?" Kate quickly asked.
"What's wrong?" The Sister shifted her body's weight from one foot to another. "I can see something is bothering you."
"It's the mentoring program. I think there might have been a mistake." The woman's face flashed with realization, finding the other girl with her eyes before looking back at Kate. "Is there a way to rearrange the mates?"
"There is no mistake, Morgan was very hard to assign." Iryn moved both cups into one hand so she could put the free one over Kate's shoulder. "That girl comes from a painful childhood; she's been through a lot before we scouted her out to join Corvus. The council wasn't sure if another student was even suitable to guide her, but I believe in you."
"But we're so different, I don't think we'll get along-"
"Kate. Don't judge a book by its cover." Kate's brows came closer together, "I think you and Morgan are not that different, you should get to know her first. Trust me, I've never been wrong with a pair in my life and I've been coordinating the system for decades."
"Iryn, please reconsider..." She begged; Kate doubted her own capabilities when it came to teaching someone like Morgan.
"Give her a chance," Iryn's smile returned to her face as if the conversation didn't happen. "I'll see you in class on Monday."
Kate's mouth fell open when the woman simply walked away, ending the conversation. She took her time returning to the group. When she joined them again, she realized that Morgan was missing.
"Where is the new girl?" She asked, taking her place by Luca.
"She left sometime after you, maybe back to the school?" Hugo said. D.C. was nested against him and when she made eye contact with Kate she shrugged.
