Thick, dark clouds rolled in on the horizon, covering what would once be a beautiful sunrise. But today, there would be no sunrise. Just as it had been for the past five years. Everything was clouded in darkness and a sense of inextinguishable evil. Lightning crackled in the distance and every time it struck the dry earth, it split. The streets had become desolate, and what was left of the town threatened to crumble with every gust of powerful wind that swept through. The only dawn this town knew was the dawn of darkness that was a present reality, only threatening to worsen. There was no light, for the sun had turned a deep, miserable black.
The old clock tower in the center of town still chimed in a chilling, discordant manner but everyone in the town knew...when it rang, it wasn't merely symbolizing the top of the hour. When the bells chimed, they sang a mourning song for the death of an innocent. The executioners didn't sleep. No matter what the hour, be it noon or 3 AM, a legalized murder of a random citizen would take place at the hands of either a bloodthirsty guard or an unwilling townsperson, forced at gunpoint to sacrifice one of their own.
Everyone kept their children off of the streets of Stonebrooke for fear of them being taken as well. It always would happen without a warning. This was the way of life now. New threats at every corner. Everyone was a captive of fear and a prisoner of their dictator's twisted laws. Whispers around the town rumored that every city in the district was conforming to these laws as well. It was spreading everywhere and for those who tried to escape, they either abandoned everyone they loved for freedom or were presumed dead.
Stonebrooke and every city in the district now found themselves sipping from the chalice of death, and just like anyone who got too close to death, its days were numbered, leaving the people with one burning question. One...small glimmer of hopefulness. In their minds, they thought the same thing- Is there anyone who would dare take grasp of the cup of fate and drink in our place?
