Jack had determined that the safest thing to do at this point would be to go to the police station and figure out who the pen belonged to so that they could promptly return it and be rid of all the dangers that seemed to be tied to it. Having agreed on this, they all piled in Nicole’s car and drove in silence for about ten minutes before Jack finally spoke.

“I don’t think Adam wrote that threat.”

“You really have a lot of faith in this Adam kid,” Nicole observed

“Because I know a year in Seattle didn’t change him that much and the last time we saw each other, he was my best friend and hardly the type of person to leave threatening notes,”  Jack replied.

“Are the police even going to check for fingerprints? We don’t even have a crime to file.” Audrey pointed out, casually changing what she sensed could become a heated subject.

“Well, there was a note on the receipt. That could be enough to warrant an investigation.,” Jack replied in an attempt to convince his friends and himself that this was the case.

Nicole parked in front of the small police station and they filed out.

The group found themselves inside of the pristine building and immediately felt intimidated by the officers that seemed to be scurrying about, taking care of every important thing they could imagine. None of them could say they’d ever been to a police station before for any reason ...Well, except for Jack.

Jack always had a new, outrageous story of adventures he’d been on and things he had done. More often than not, his friends would laugh at him because they no longer knew which of his tales were true, and which ones he told simply to entertain them. Audrey could remember quite certainly that there had been one of these stories where Jack had claimed to have been taken to the police station once before, under the false accusation of fraud.

As the four of them took in their surroundings, they finally recognized the front desk. Jack and Andrew felt like they would be taken more seriously if only two of them approached the counter. So the boys casually approached the desk while the girls found their seats in the waiting area.

A uniformed woman with long, blonde hair stood behind the desk, filing some papers in a nearby filing cabinet. It took her a moment to notice the two boys standing in front of her workspace, but finally,. she looked up. Her badge read ‘B. Hargrove.’

“Hi, how can I help you?”

“Hi, I’m Andrew and this is Jack” Andrew and Jack shook the woman’s hand nervously.

“Blakeleigh,” the woman replied with a small smile. “What can I help you with?”

“What do we need to do in order to get fingerprint results from a common household item?” Andrew asked.

The woman leaned back. “Like what?”

Andrew hesitantly took the pen from the bag and set it carefully on the marble top. “This,” he said quietly. “I’ve had it for most of my life, but I want to know who  it belonged to before and was hoping there would be a way I could trace it’s owner and hopefully find its history.”

Blakeleigh picked the pen up and carefully examined it.

Andrew,  why are you giving the pen to her? She’s going to steal it.  Take it BACK.
