Chapter Three: The Rival

I decided to start with Keith Logan, the co-captain. I walked towards the basketball court, knowing he would be there. I noticed him sitting down by the basketball ring. His knees were bent with his arms resting on top of them. I approached him slowly, trying hard not to startle him. He finally noticed me a few minutes later, brushing his shaggy black hair away from his eyes. He sat up straighter, looking at me.

"Hey, Charisse." He greeted me with a half-smile. I smiled back, sitting cross-legged in front of him.

"So Keith...how are you holding up?" I asked slowly and carefully.

"This is freaking crazy!" He exploded. "I saw John just yesterday walking around, playing basketball! Being alive! No way could he be..." Keith trailed off, not being able to continue.

"Keith, everyone saw him yesterday." I pointed out, stressing the word 'everyone'.

"No, I mean after school, we were hanging out behind the gym. I had to go home early to pick up my sister. He stayed behind." Keith explained.

"Who was with you besides John?' I inquired.

"Autumn Delmont, and I think Wesley Schneider was stalking us, though. Well, mostly Autumn."

Having my suspects confirmed, I started thinking. Then I suddenly blurted out, "Did you kill him?!"

I didn't really know what I was doing but I really didn't care at the moment, watching his reaction carefully. He looked surprised, then confused, and when my question finally managed to sink in, he looked absolutely furious.

"What the hell?! He was my friend, my captain! How can you even say that?!" He screamed. "Yes, he was my rival and yes, we disagreed on a lot of things but I wouldn't kill him!" He got up, livid, and started walking away. I sighed, stood up and decided to pay my next suspect a visit.
