Chapter XII
What. Is. This. Sound.
I clench my teeth together and squeeze my eyes shut, begging for my sleep to come back and for that noise to stop sounding.
The high-pitched siren-like ringtone is giving me a headache, and I finally remember that that annoying sound is actually my phone. After the Math-slash-phone incident, I quickly changed my ring tone to a more… classical one, the kind that sounds like a home phone made in the early 90s.
Conclusion: I have terrible ring tone taste.
I grab my pillow and press it down hard on my face, trying to tune out that god-awful sound and I stop the moment I realize that not only a pillow sucks to tune out high-pitched noises, but it also makes me choke on my own carbon dioxide.
My alarm clock on the nightstand indicates 8:46 in the morning. Who calls so early on a Saturday???
The Ringing suddenly stops, and I let out a sigh of relief, grabbing my pillow to place it back under my head, and just as I’m getting comfortable in the softest covers in the world, the infuriating sound starts again, louder than ever.
I let out a loud, husky groan and crawl out of bed, groggily making my way across the room, towards my school bag, the tone getting louder and louder at my imminent approach.
I clench my teeth together in annoyance and roughly shove my hand in my bag to claim my phone.
“What?” I snap, not bothering to check the caller ID before answering.
“Hey Junes!!!” Jordie’s hyper voice sounds through the phone, even louder than the ring tone. I keep the phone at a good distance from my ear and glare at it.
“Do you know what time it is, Jordie? Or even what day we are??”
Her strident laugh sounds. “Oh, Junes, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were asleep!!”
What else would I be doing at 9am on a Saturday???
“What do you want?” My sigh whooshes through the phone.
“Okay, so, Daki, Lisa, Carrie and I were thinking of going to Atlanta for the day, shopping, having lunch an’ maybe watching a movie!!! And we want you to come!!!” She yelled through the phone, overly excited.
“… What?” I blink a few times, trying to get rid of the cloud of drowsiness.
Atlanta is couple of hours away from this town, and just the idea of taking a road trip with Dakota and Jordie blowing the roof off with their probably terrible singing, and Lisa trying to control my every move isn’t very tempting!
“Er, you know what? I have homework, and I’m pretty ti-” I start.
“Come oooooooooon!” Jordie wines and I move the phone away from my ear once again. “You can do your homework tomorrow!! Pleeeeease!! I mean, it’s going to be fun!!! And we’ll be back around nine, and it’s a whole day of fun!!! Fun fun fun!!” She shouts in a singsong tone.
Hang on, we’d be back at nine? Then, it means my friendly date with Matt wouldn’t happen, right? Because, I accidently can’t make it, right? I mean, it’s really too bad, and we can postpone it!
“You know what?” I ask in a lighter tone. “I’m in. When are you picking me up?”
When Jordie is done letting out tiny excited shrieks, she informs me they’ll be there in 45 minutes. I hang up and click on the message icon blinking in the top corner.
