I brought the glass back to my mouth and took a sip of my mojito. Virgin. Not just because it was still quite early, but also because it was a super warm day and alcohol and warm days don't really go together. At least in my opinion, for a lot of people in the bar, just the fact that it was friday afternoon seemed to be enough reason to drink. The mojito wasn't that cold anymore, but still refreshing.
A guy came over on my left side and leaned over the bar -- too close to me, especially considering the fact that the bar was practically empty -- to beckon the bartender and order a beer. He was not bad on the eye and he knew it. That was clear as day.
"Hello there," he said as he turned towards me, one arm leaning on the bar and thus leaning a little over me. "How are you?"
I didn't look at him, kept my gaze on my glas. "Good," I answered but said nothing more.
"What, you aren't going to ask me how I am doing?" he said laughing.
"No."
"Oh, you like games, don't you?"
"No, actually I don't."
"Well then, I'll cut to the chase. What are you doing here?"
I took a deep breath. God, this guy doesn't take a hint, does he? "Well, I was enjoying my drink."
"All by yourself?"
Quickly I let my gaze wander to the door on the right side of the bar. " Well, actually-"
"What is your name?" I didn't think it was possible, but he managed to lean in even closer.
While I took another deep breath I made myself big and looked at him, with the thought: the moment he touches me, I kill him. "I don't think that is any of your business."
He took a step back, hands in the air, trying to convince me of his innocence. "Oh, calm down, why are you so rude? I just want to get to know you?"
I hear the door open and when I quickly take a peek at it I see Jason make his way back.
He is a newer colleague. I don't really trust him yet with all his muscles and what not, so what he does next will be very important for my judgement.
Looking back at the guy I said:"Well, I was completely fine without you, so."
"Oh, come on I-"
"I think it's time for you to go." Jason put an insistent hand on the man's shoulder. The guy looks from Jason to me and back, makes the connection that we know each other (so he can take hints) and takes another step back. "Okay..." He puts his hands up in defeat.
I let go of a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
"She is all yours." He took another small step and started to turn away when he said: "She's ugly anyway."
I felt Jason tense up, but before he could do or say anything, I threw my head back and laughed. The guy took a slightly bigger step back, but turned back towards me. Both he and Jason looked at me, stunned.
"Wow, thank you, so MUCH! That is the biggest compliment you could ever give me!" I kept my big smile. The two men looked tentatively at me, as if they were considering if I had gone crazy.
"Jason! Look!" I pointed at the guy, while looking at Jason. "I have finally done it! I have started to repel assholes!" I turned back towards the guy and finished it all off by saying: "When you go to hell, give Lucifer my best wishes, I haven't seen him in a while." And because I was enjoying myself so much I took in a scharp breath while clasping my hands in front of my face in excitement and said: "Maybe I will visit you! I do enjoy watching idiot mortals get tortured."
I had barely finished my sentence or he started to skip away from me, faster than his legs could run.
I watched him go and smirked. Jason stood there and watched with me. In awe or shock or maybe both, I didn't know. Only then I noticed how quite the bar had become. When I looked around I saw people look away as if to deny that they had heard everything.
Then, Jason breathed in deeply and took a seat by my side, a little bit further away than strictly necessary.
I took another sip from my drink. It somehow had become sweeter.
"Dare I ask what just happened?" Jason asked carefully.
"Oh, it's an old trick," I answered and smiled, genuinely. "It's something my friends and I developed when we were in college. We were so sick of being scared that we decided to make men scared of us. It became our little experiment and this is kind of the result."
My heart warmed at the memories, but there was one memory that was the warmest. "It's very effective, you know."
Jason gave a short chuckle. "Yeah, I noticed."
"You know, one time, a similar situation happened and about a year later I was at this bus stop. It wasn't that late yet, maybe nine pm. I had gotten into the habit of thinking, 'the first person that touches me will get killed' and that somehow made that people would literally avoid me, the masses would split before me, just as Moses split the sea." I said that last bit with a little extra flair of drama and let out a chuckle. I turned towards Jason and saw him watching me with something that was almost definitly awe in his eyes.
I continued: "So, I was at this bus stop and there were a few other people, all minding their own business, and out of the corner of my eye I see someone approaching. So I look up," I try to stifle my laugh, because I know what is coming next, "and it is the same guy I spooked a year before and he sees me - the moment he recognized me was priceless - and his eyes go all big and then," now I do let out a laugh, " he turns around so fast he bumps into his friend, who says: 'What the fuck, dude?' and the other guy just yells: 'RUN!' and he wants to get out of there so badly he falls on his face, scrambles up and gets the hell out of there."
Jason and I are both laughing.
"Remind me to introduce you to my sister. She needs to hear that story."
That and the way he looked at me -- awe but also definitely a little bit of fear -- made me decide to give him a chance.
