(5) Rejected:

"Go fuck yourself," I grumbled to Josiah as he laughed at me. I snarled and threw the rest of my coke at him. I had slipped, which resulted in half my coke draining itself on my shirt. Jo's now soda-covered face starred down at me in shock. I smirked and opened my locker. I always kept a change of clothes in here just in case. You never knew when you would get into some fight with some bitch and end up with torn clothes or something. I had even dropped some guys--and they had even tried to fight back. Not that it helped them any...

"Oh shit. Here comes the mutts," Jo muttered. We may have avoided them in the past couple of days, but I just didn't have the energy anymore. Not after the call from my 'adoptive' father. And then begins the other conversation I'd rather not start. I don't know what to think really. I've been working on putting up my defensive walls again and just trying to get back to normal. I'll fight every second of my life to stay away from that bastard. It didn't really matter that he found me now.

I looked over my shoulder to see a group of guys. They strolled in with a presence of authority. People stepped out of their way as they walked through the hallway. They had already gained control over most of the school in two days. It made me remember my old pack, and it made me sick. I wanted to rip them all apart.

And then my eyes hit him. He was tall, dark, and oh-so-handsome. He walked at the front of the group, his eyes scanning the crowd. He had dark hair and light blue eyes--so light that they were grey. I could feel myself gulp. The heat around me seemed to be rising. I could feel my control faltering. My walls were coming down, but in a different way. This time it felt like this mystery guy was pulling me apart, piece by piece.

He was two seconds from looking at me, and a frown slipped onto his gorgeous face as he sniffed the air. He would have smelt my scent by now, and if I was right about my reactions...

"My God, Alora!" Jo yelled. I snapped my attention to look at Jo who was starring at me. My eyes fell to my body to see small flames licking at my shirt--covering my arms and torso.

"Shit," I cursed as I quickly threw my shirt off onto the ground. I had to calm myself. My skin was covered in flames. I focused, quickly closing my eyes as the flames disappeared, and I grabbed another shirt out of my locker. I pulled it over my head now that the flames were gone, but not quick enough to have everyone see my bare back. Gasps coursed around through the hallway. Yes, I know.

Being a phoenix, I had a large tattoo of a firebird on my back. The whole picture wasn't visible because of my sports bra, so no one really knew what it was, but it was still some impressive work. Most kids in high school didn't have their back covered by a tattoo.

There were only like a dozen kids in the hallway, so not that many people could have seen the flames and all.

I felt him looking at me. I knew he had figured it out--he knew we were mates. I averted my eyes as I grabbed my books and dragged Jo away behind me. Being a werewolf, it was easy to find your mate--you could smell them, you felt the pull to them, and your touch was electric. Being a phoenix, when you found your mate you would lose control of your phoenix gifts--which is why I just lit up into flames. It was a power of the phoenix, and I had just lost it in front of the whole hallway of students.

I could tell that none of them suspected anything. Maybe I could say I had a lighter, and it malfunctioned or something. I'm sure none of them would ever suspect anything.

"What the hell?" Jo hissed. I glared at him as we made our way to first period. Could he not just keep his damn mouth shut and not worry about it?

"Shut up, Josiah," I growled. Jo pulled me to a halt and forced me to look into his eyes. His eyes searched mine.
