'head down, breathe, don't look up' I look up, the hall is empty. no one is around. I reach into the pocket attached to the front pocket of my sweatshirt, tangled earbuds, great. 30 seconds, gone untangling these. 30 seconds that I could have been blocking out the world. 'click' the door opens, 'don't look up' I look up, blue, the kind of blue that brings you closer to sadness. The type of blue that invites you in and then kills you slowly. But what I seemed to notice the most was the pain behind them, not the pain they could make you feel, but the pain they were filling. Drawing myself from the eyes I see a smile, it seems forced. A chuckle, a laugh. It's a boy, of course, it's a boy. Typical, brown hair, blue eyes. But he looks different. I look back at his eyes, he's looking towards me, I feel myself being pulled. I move one foot closer to him. My cheeks heat up 'what is happening? I never go red' I look down, embarrassed that one boy is making me feel this way. I glance back up his eyes have no longer met mine. My foot shifts back, next to my other one. More students enter the hall, it slowly fills up.
The Headmaster stands up and starts speaking, my fingers place the earbuds in my ears and I plug the other end into my phone. Nothing plays, just to fill in the empty space between the Headmaster speaking and the silence of students nodding or agreeing. They keep going on, then finally we get dismissed, new school, this can never be good. I pick my bag up and sling it over my shoulder, I shuffle slowly out of the main hall and I take another look down at my timetable. Biology, English and Maths.
Biology; the class that all dread, all but me. Biology is delving into who we are, and how we are made. Not ethics and sex. But the factors that determine our eye colour, hair colour, why boys are boys and girls are girls. First, to enter the class, my earbuds still playing nothing but silence. An older lady enters, I can only assume that she is Mrs Cark, the biology teacher, she gets her self situated at her desk as the rest of the class files in. Mr Blue eyes are the last to enter the class. Mrs Clark rises from her desk, glances around the room and writes 'pairs' on the board.
She starts listing out names "Aaron and Grace, Ace and Violet" I look up at the sound of my name, laughter erupts from behind me. Oh, it's that group, great. I zone out as Mrs Clark keeps reading out names, she stops for a moment "Now join up in your pairs" I start looking around the room, Mr Blue Eyes is looking at me, he starts to walk towards me, I panic and look away and I keep my head down. "Hi, I'm Ace, are you Violet?" I look up and see Mr Blue Eyes, "Yes, hello Ace" I offer my hand out and he shakes it. Mrs Clark tells everyone to take a seat and pull out their Biology workbooks. Everyone starts working away in their books when I feel a hand touch my arm, I look at Ace and smile softly. We make eye contact, for what seems like a dangerously long time. The bell then rings, we pack up our stuff, time for English.
