It was at dinner when Nick brought up the problem with the class.

"Well, what are you going to do?" His dad asked when he finished explaining the situation.

Nick furrowed his brows, but it was James that voiced their confusion.

"What do you mean dad? He shouldn't have to take it, I mean even if Marcus wasn't in the picture, Nick has mom. Right?" He asked, waving a hand in the direction of said woman.

"Thank you, James for clarifying that  up for us." Melissa deadpanned.

Alex ignored his family's sarcasm and went on to explain it to his two sons.

"While you're mom may be a geneticist, she's not a teacher, they wouldn't accept it. We could say she's teaching you, but unless there's proof, we could be lying. It needs to be someone who is licenced to teach, which of course your mom isn't.

"Nick what you need to do is take that class, no buts." He said when Nick tried to interrupt.

"Listen to me Nick, do you know what this law means? It means that if you do not take this class or in your case, refuse to take this class, you are telling other people that you do not intend to graduate. You are saying that you are wasting school fundings and the time and effort of your teachers that have other classes who do have students who want to graduate." He paused, letting his words sink in.

"It also means that when Marcus graduates, you won't have any defense against having to live with him right after." Melissa added, watching her boys pale. Even though it hurt to even think about, she continued.

"See, even when Marcus graduates, we can use your schooling to keep you with us for another year, maybe. Although he can just agree that you can go to school while you live with him, that's still a few of hours you don't have to be around him, right? If you don't intend to graduate, Marcus could come literally right after he graduates and take you with him, and we won't legally be able to do anything about that."

"And if you don't think that Marcus won't realize that, won't use that to his advantage, then you might as well start packing to go with him right  now." Nick turned to his dad, pale, brown eyes wide as Alex finished telling him.

They all finished the rest of their meal in silence. The atmosphere tense and subdued. Each person with their thoughts circling around in their minds.

Later, when their parents went to bed, James snuck into his brothers' room. Checking to see if Nick was awake, brown eyes met green and James sat on the bed.

They both looked at each other in silence for a while, until Nick whispered.

"It's not your fault you know, I should have listed to you better."

James chuckled humorlessly. "It is, he was my friend. I should have realized it earlier. I should have noticed the way he looked at you. Talked about you, followed you. I should have at least told Mom and Dad about it when I did. I thought I could handle him. Now look, you have to take a stupid class, 'cuz of me."

"Hey now, I'm pretty sure it's not stupid, just kind of pointless for like, you know, me." Nick shrugged, sitting up so he could talk to his brother better.

James sighed, rolling his eyes. "So what are you going to do? I mean, you don't have to take the class, we could probably argue your case with the school council. On the other hand,-"

"Yeah, I know. Marcus, ungh." Nick sighed. " I think I'll just take the class, then if we could argue against it like durning the school year, then yeah. I mean it won't be too hard anyways. But, I would like to show that I followed the rules even if I really didn't need to. That could help us."

James hummed." That could be a point in our favor, but Marcus could always make it seem like he easily agreed and make himself look like a good alpha."

Nick eyed his brother, "You think he'd do that? I mean I can see it, but I feel like he'd use this against me, y'know? Not like the whole, 'no mating until graduation' thing. Besides, I wouldn't be surprised if he's already thought of a way around that too."

" I don't know, probably." James grunted and yawned. Nick followed right after.

" Alright, enough of this feelings thing. Go to sleep bro." James got up from the bed, and tugging his brothers' forehead, leaned his against it in solidarity. Nick leaned away soon, eyes dragging down in exhaustion. Ruffling Nick's short curls, James left to his room.

Even when he did, both brothers stayed up a little longer, both contemplating the conversation. Eventually though, both fell into a troubled sleep.
