one.
i was standing in line at the coffee shop, waiting ahead of the people behind me. it had seemed like ages since i had woken up and gotten dressed.
"i can help whoever is next." called the cashier. "hi, what can i get for you?" she says. i looked over to the wide range of various coffees and teas.
"ill have a caramel iced coffee with skim." i told her, overthinking if i made the right choice for this special occasion.
"and whats your name?"
when i told her my name, i sat down at what seemed like the last spot in this place and though over my schedule for the day.
coffee. store. home.
it had been a few minutes when a guy called my name for my coffee.
"caramel iced coffee with skim for jade!" he called, scanning the building for anyone walking over.
i stood up from the striped fabric chairs, walked over to take my coffee, and left because the amount of talking in that place reminded me how little friends i have.
so i walked down the side walk, stepping over the cracks to keep me distracted, turning when i needed to turn to get me to the store.
but something seemed different, my bag felt lighter, as if something was missing. i searched everywhere, my pockets, my bag, then i realized what i was missing. my wallet.
i ran back into the shop, looking through the windows to see if anyone looked suspicious like they just stole a wallet from an innocent woman like me. but as i looked, i saw a boy holding my wallet while looking around as i he was looking for something. or someone.
i walked up and stood in front of him, looking at my wallet, then him, not saying a word.
"is this yours?" he asked, holding my wallet up to show me.
"yeah, thank you." i say to the boy. i turn around and start to walk out the door.
"wait," he says while catching up to me. "whats the occasion?" i asks while looking at my beige dress.
"i have a name," i say discreetly, stopping to continue the unwanted conversation. "its jade." i tell him.
"aiden. well jade, whats the occasion?"
"its my birthday today. i was going to the store to get myself a cake then i lost my wallet then i came back here." i told him embarrassingly.
he didnt respond though, he went up to the now empty line and ordered something, but i didnt quite hear what he said. but i saw him point at a double fudge cake in the display and turn back around to face me.
"what are you doing?" i asked him, suspicious of what he was doing.
"this is my birthday present to you, from a complete stranger." he turned around to face the cashier from earlier and the slice of cake. picking the cake up he turned back around on his heels, handing me the cake. "happy birthday."
