Chapter 5

"Lilykit! What are you doing in here?" I hear Dovewing mew, and instantly know I am in trouble. "Why are you out of your nest?"

"Ugh, Dovewing! I'm almost old enough to be out of the camp and it's way too stuffy in there, so I came in here to sleep! It's much better than the nursery. It's not like I was missed."

"What are you mewing about? You had me worried sick! You're going to spend today in the nursery thinking about what you've done. Starclan knows you deserve it," she scolds.

"What?!" I mew, not buying her statement. "Today is my apprenticeship ceremony! I can't miss that!" I exclaim and immediately recognize my mistake.

"How do you know about that? It was supposed to be a secret!" She rebukes and glares at Jayfeather. He senses her glare and twitches his whiskers.

"Looks like you've got a kit who can tell the future!" He mews and backs into his den. I still don't understand how he does that without tripping.

"Ugh Jay! I can't believe you spoiled it!" she mews and he flicks his tail dismissively. "Stupid furball" she mutters under her breath.

"I heard that!" he calls from the back of the den. While Dovewing turns around to snap at him I make my escape. I bound to the elder's den to listen to their tails.

"And then the dog comes from nowhere and jumps onto my back! I can barely fight him off, but-"

"Oh shut up you fleabag. We all know those are tall tales" Mousefur interrupts twitching her whiskers. "Let me tell you the story of how you came to be."

"Oh would you? That would be fantastic!" I exclaim forgetting all about Purdy's story.

"Your father was a proud young apprentice. He always loved to show off to all the others"

"Just like Jinglekit! So that's where he gets it from!" I burst out, but immediately close my mouth when I see Mousefur's annoyed face. "Sorry Mousefur, I'll be quiet now."

"I'd think so! Anyway, he was always head over heels for your mother, but he was not receiving the same from her. The truth was, your mother was in love with the Shadowclan leader, Tigerstar. But he was known as Tigerpaw then. They met on a border patrol and instantly knew there was something there. Soon gatherings felt too long of a wait for them, so they began sneaking out most nights to meet in secret. Dovewing became pregnant, and the clan assumed they were Bumblestripe's kits. She could not bare the thought of breaking his heart, so she came clean. She decided to stay in Thunderclan to have her kits but ran away with Ivypool just before they were born. She came back shortly with four healthy kits, all looking almost identical to her. All but one...

"But that was right before a difficult leafbare, and that harsh cold took her four kits from her. I cannot seem to remember what their names are, but they were some of the most beautiful kits ever. It's a shame they all had to go, but Starclan was ready for them I guess. Well after they all died, she refused to see Tigetstar anymore, and the two haven't spoken since. She found comfort in Bumblstripe, and they eventually became mates. Now that I think about it, you look just like one from her first litter. You know which one I'm talking about Purdy?" She calls to him and he looks thoughtfully at her.

"Yes, yes. I know exactly who you're talking about. Er, Lilackit was her name I believe. She was a looker, that's for sure. Gorgeous, looked just like Lilykit, didn't she?" He turned his questioning look at Mousefur and she rolled her eyes.

"Purdy is slowly losing his memory. It's a surprise he still has any at all!" She mews tauntingly with a humorous glint in her eyes.

"Will all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather beneath the highrock for a clan meeting!" Firestar orders. I feel excitement tingling up through my paws.

"That's me! Gotta go! I'll come visit you later, I promise!" I call over my shoulder as I bound out of the elder's den. I can't wait to see what's in store for me.
