"Mit-" I stopped myself from calling out to him when I noticed him asleep on the couch. David was curled up next to him with Wyatt sleeping in the little boy's arms. The tv was playing some kid's movie. I think it's been three days since Mitch and I's little misunderstanding. He hasn't really spoke to me. "David?" I whispered. Wyatt stretched in the sleeping boy's arms.
"Papa?" David rubbed his eyes to get a better look at me as he woke up. "Scotty....I wanna go home." He hugged me. I rubbed his back gently. He began crying and that caused Mitch to wake up with a start. David clung to me. "I wanna go home!" He hiccuped in the middle of one of his sobs. I looked at Mitch for help.
"Come here baby." David curled up to Mitch's chest and began sobbing in the crook of his neck. It's been like this for awhile now. David has been homesick for a long time. He doesn't understand what's going on. He misses Chris. "How long are we going to be here?" Mitch asked after he got David to calm down. The little boy was watching cartoons in the living room while petting the cat.
"I don't know." Mitch rolled his eyes.
"I can't take it Scott. David went to see my mother every weekend. He misses her. I miss her. We need to get back to our normal life."
"I can't let you do that with a killer out there. Witness protection is what will keep you safe." He sighed. I could tell he didn't want to do that. Risk the safety of his son.
"Sometimes I wish this never happened."
"Why only sometimes?" He didn't answer me. The doorbell interrupted us and he went to answer it.
"Sherry?"
"Aw. I see you got a little pet. Isn't he adorable." I walked into the living room. Mitch was standing with the front door open and Sherry standing in it. "There's a party tonight. Just for adults. I would like to invite you and Scott." Mitch looked back at me. His eyes were pleading for my help.
"Well we haven't found a good babysitter for David."
"Oh. He can go with Kirstie. She babysits Cassie for me." I came to slip my arm around Mitch's waist.
"We don't really know her."
"I take full responsibility for her. She's a wonderful girl. Cassie will be with David too so it's not like he'll be alone." I could tell Mitch didn't want David to be out of his sight. He was grabbing my hand tightly. His whole body was tensed too.
"I want to go Daddy." David was standing by us now. "I want you to have fun too." Mitch knelt down in front of his son, brushing his fingers across his tiny cheek.
"David...." Mitch kissed David's forehead. He got up from his spot on the ground. "I don't see a problem with it. He'll be safe right?"
"Extremely. Cassie and David can even have a little sleep over." David giggled happily.
"Okay. What time?"
"Seven. Then we'll go to the party." Sherry left quickly after.
"That woman is never going to give up, is she?" Mitch shut the door with a loud sigh.
"She thinks you're punishing me." He laughed.
"Why would she think that?"
"She keeps seeing my bed on the couch." Mitch let his eyes drift over me pretty obviously.
"You're punishing yourself. You could come to bed with me at any point." He began walking towards the kitchen. He stopped when he was right next to me. "I won't bite unless you ask me to." I closed my eyes as I heard his footsteps walk away. I bit my lip as unclean thoughts flooded my mind.
