Prologue:
"Why are you doing this?" Riya Sharma sobbed, tears trailing her dusky soft cheeks.
Aakash Kapoor tugged at his hair, pain etched all over his face. It was the last thing he wanted to do, but there was no choice. Under normal circumstances, the person who initiates the break-up faces relief, but in this case, both of them were going to leave heartbroken after this fateful night.
"Riya," Aakash whispered, cupping her face, and wiping her tears away. "You know we can't do anything now."
"You promised," Riya shouted, suddenly angry. "You said you'll never leave me."
Aakash sighed. "Yes. Yes, Riya. I said I never would. But I've tried everything I could, to convince your parents. They wouldn't budge. My parents weren't happy, but they did say I could marry you."
"Let's run away," Riya said.
"No!" Aakash all but screamed. "I know you. You'll always put your parents' happiness before yours. I can't bear to have you cry every day, feeling so guilty. You've been feeling that way for the past six years already."
"You are worth it," Riya said, quietly.
"I didn't come here just to break up with you, and patch up again, Riya. I've come here to say goodbye. I've decided to take up the offer to transfer to London. You'll move on. You need to learn to let go now. There's no future for us anymore." Aakash said sadly, but sternly.
"You've decided to take up the offer." It was a statement. Not a question.
"Yes."
"Alright then. Then I guess this is it. You won't stop talking to me right?"
"Riya."
Riya sighed. "I know. It won't work. But I promise you this won't be the last time we'll meet and talk."
Aakash just nodded. He turned around, but Riya caught his wrist.
"For old time sake," Riya said, and hugged him.
The two, who were usually aware of their surroundings whenever they were together, forgot all about it that day. They didn't care about the number of people staring at them, muttering stuff, or shooting dirty glances at them. At that moment, it was as though there was no one else in the world except them.
Riya moved away first, and Aakash placed his forehead on hers.
"I'll always love you, Riya. Always. But I'm so sorry, " he said.
And this time, when he walked away, Riya didn't stop him. Instead, she knelt down and cried her heart out like never before.
