On going home, I locked myself inside my room and took the brochure out of my pocket and skimmed through the pages, trying to see what it was all about.
'Switzerland ski tour. 15 day package with breakfast, lunch and dinner included. 1 Lakh only.'
Woah, hold on there 1 Lakh ONLY ? Not that is was thaaaaat costly. Yeah, it was a pretty reasonable price for 15 days with food included. And I already had about 3-4 lakhs in my savings. Did I mention that I have saved very single penny ever since I was 9? Okay I just did.
So this is what Freya was about to do. There, all people my age were out partying, going on crazy ski trips and drinking, while I sit here, studying for my terminals that are about 5 months away. I know I am a nerd. You probably guessed it from previous sentence. N-E-R-D. Weird word. How come I never noticed. Whatever.
I looked at my biology textbook and for the first time in my life, I actually glared at it. Like glared-glared. As if it were my arch nemesis of some kind. Wow, this ski thing was actually getting to me.
*****
"Dinner is ready!" My mom called from downstairs.
"Coming!" I hollered, standing up and hiding the brochure in my fat text book. F-A-T. I chuckled. I was still sorta upset about my nerd lifestyle,I guess.I ran down the stairs.
There, sitting in the table was my all time fave dish, sugar bacon. I absolutely love sugar bacon. It is like my secret boyfriend. Only my mom knew about this relationship though. Lol.
Normally on seeing sugar bacon I'd be all 'yeahoo' and 'yippee' but for some reason I didn't really feel like it. No idea why. Somehow my mind wandered back to the ski trip. I didn't notice my mom was talking till I saw her waving a fork in front of me.
"You okay? You kind of spaced out there,"my mom asked, concerned.
"I'm fine," my mom raised her brow,"really."
"So how many chapters in biology did you finish ?" My mom asked, taking a bite of her bacon.
None, I wanted to say.
"About 2," I said, smoothly lying.
"Hmm. Good. Try to finish 1 more before going to sleep."
I got angry. I tried to take a deep breath , and count to 10 but my mouth beat me to it.
"Why now? The biology test is like,I don't know, 3 weeks away. Why so early?"I questioned, slightly annoyed.
My mom gave me a weird look. This was unusual of me to act like this. But somehow it just angered me that my mom always wanted me studying." Fine then. Study chemistry for a while," she replied.
That just angered me even more. I stood up and slammed my fist on the table making mom and my sister flinch.
"Why? Why should I always study when all people my age go out partying and actually enjoy their childhood. Why can't I dye my hair some weird color? Why do I alwayyyys have to study. I've had enough of this," I scream, but my voice quietens down once I look at my mom.
"Oh!" I prepare for the speech which was about to come." You want to dye your hair? I don't mind but please don't dye it bright red . Did you see that Franna girl today at the supermarket? I was this close to calling an ambulance on seeing her hair. I thought it was blood. If you want to do it, go for some purplish hue. Alright?"
I mentally face palmed myself. Was that the only part of the whole outburst I experienced she got? This woman. She didn't get a hint of what I was saying,so I just stood up and abruptly left.
