Chapter 1: The Leap of Fayth

“No, please don’t,” Penn begged me as I pulled myself up onto the railing.

“She’s not going to do it,” Mrs. Ulderman taunted me, “She’s too chicken.”

“Fayth, please,” Penn pleaded, pacing restlessly behind me, unable to do anything to stop this from happening, to stop me.

I said nothing as I crouched on the railing, my hands gripping the cold, metal bar between my feet. I stood carefully, balancing on the balls of my feet. I didn't have a choice anymore. What was the point exactly, of going on?  Of continuing like this?

“Go on!” someone cheered.

“Do it! Show us!” Lily sneered from beside me.

Penn floated beside me, just in front of the railing, looking at me with his wide brown eyes as he wrung his hands helplessly.

“Stop,” I whispered, a tear sliding down my cheek. I didn't know who I was talking too anymore. To them, to stop taunting me? To Penn, to stop pleading with me not to do this? To myself, to just do it already and end the pain?

“Oh, look at the poor baby!” Mrs. Ulderman cried gleefully.

“Aw, are you crying?” Lila said, her upper lip curling back, distorting her pretty face into something ugly and sinister.

Rain started to fall in sheets, soaking me right through my black hoodie and jeans within seconds. I stood carefully, but still I wobbled.

“Fayth stop! Please don’t do it!” Penn cried in anguish.

“Ignore him! Do it!” Mrs. Ulderman shouted angrily.

“Do it! Do it!” Lily chanted.

All around me a sea of voices filled the air, all pleading with me or taunting me, encouraging me to jump, betting that I would or betting that I wouldn’t, and whether or not I’d survive if I did.

I was sick of it all. All sixteen years of my life had been tormented and tainted by their taunts and mockery and I was done with it all. I was sick of being the outcast, being abnormal.

My toes curled around the bar, but I barely felt my toes or feet anymore. My hands and fingers and toes and feet were frozen by the ice cold rain falling from the sky and the blasts of cold wind.

A huge gust of wind blew, nearly knocking me off the bar of the bridge. I whimpered, covering my ears with my hands in attempt to drown out all the voices over the wind and rain.

“Stop!” I shouted, “Just stop!”

All around me laughter sounded and I squeezed my eyes shut against the hysterical sound of it; it was the laughter of those who’d lost their minds, who took pleasure in other people’s pain. The cruel, the psychotic, the sadistic; I heard them all and more.

Wind blew around me, throwing icy rain into my face which stung at my cheeks.

“Did you hear that?” Mrs. Ulderman cried.

“She wants us to stop!” Lily chortled, doubled over in hysterical laughter.

“Fayth!” Penn shouted over the sea of voices all around me.

Too many voices, too many people, too many laughs and taunts. Too many slaps and punches, too many jokes and abuse.

“STOP!” I screamed, but the laughter only increased in volume until it was the only thing I heard.

“We’re never going to leave you alone,” Lily cried gleefully, her blue eyes lighting up in excitement.

“Wherever you go, we’ll be there,” Mrs. Ulderman shouted over the laughter.

“No, no, no, no, NO!” I chanted like a crazy person, each ‘no’ increasing in volume until I was shouting again.

“Stop it!” Penn shouted at them, “Fayth, don’t do it! Please, don’t do it!”

But I barely heard him, all I heard was the laughter, the mocking edge to every voice I heard, all I saw was the gleeful look in the eyes of the people I saw that I shouldn’t see.

“Do it!” they shouted.

My head pounded and my heart thudded so hard I was sure it was about to stop beating all together.

“Do it!” They shouted louder.

I shook my head, trying to dislodge the waterfall of voices blocking out every coherent thought.

“Stop!” I screamed.

“Fayth!” Penn cried.

“Do it!” the shouted.

“I’m sorry, Penn,” I whispered, bending my knees as I sprung off the bridge railing. Halfway down my fall, my eyes flashed open and a blood curling scream tore through my lips.

No! I didn’t want this! I didn’t want to die!

But it was too late; the freezing, crazy water of the lake kept getting closer and closer.

“Fayth!” Penn screamed.

His voice and the laughter were the last things I heard before I slammed into the icy water, sinking to the bottom as my life’s air floated to the surface. Blackness seeped across my vision like a cloudy ink until I saw nothing and heard nothing. There was nothing left.
