David was confused. And he had good reason. It had been a week since I last spoke to him, and since that day I’d been ignoring him. Penn thought I was a total moron for ignoring the guy all this time and avoiding him like the plague, but I couldn't help it. I was afraid of getting close to people. Penn didn't count because well...he's already dead, so not much else can happen to him besides ‘going into the light’ which is what we like to call ‘disappearing without freakin’ telling anybody.’
Anyways, if what Antonio said was true about those people catching supernaturals and experimenting, who’s to say they won’t get rid of David to get to me? That wasn't exactly a risk I was willing to take. I may not like David very much but he didn’t deserve to be eliminated for being around me and unknowingly protecting me.
I continued to let him drive me to and from school, but whenever he spoke to me I gave one word answers or sounds to let him know I heard him and that I was actually acknowledging him. I could see he was slowly getting pissed off at me again, and while that should be a good thing, I didn’t quite enjoy having him pissed off at me that much.
So, at the one week mark since I last spoke to him, I spoke to him again.
He’d just walked into math class, slamming his books down in annoyance next to me before taking his seat and glowering at the overhead projector.
“I’m sorry,” I muttered.
“What?” he snapped.
I narrowed my eyes at him, feeling irritation rise as I struggled to keep it under control. “I’m sorry," I repeated.
“For what?” he asked, sounding a touch calmer than before.
I shrugged, turning to look at the front of the class, “I’m not good at…at well…this…socializing,” I winced. That was true…but not the reason why I had been avoiding him for the past week. If I told him the real reason he’d probably try to lock me up in an asylum.
“You’re not that bad."
“See? He’s defending you! I told you he has a crush on you!” Penn said cheerily.
I inhaled sharply, reminding myself Penn was just joking for a moment before I answered David, “I’m pretty bad at it.”
“When you came over you didn’t seem that bad at it,” he said, but then he paused and I turned to look at him, “I mean, there were those times when you talked but no one had said anything.”
I bit my lip, “I told you I was bad.”
“Can I ask why you were speaking to…well, nobody?” David asked curiously, leaning towards me.
I leaned back a bit, not used to people being this close, “No, you may not."
He backed off right away, “Alright, I can respect your privacy.”
I frowned. I wasn’t exactly expecting him to give up so easily. His usual persistence was what I was expecting...perhaps he learned that wasn't the best way to go about being around me. Or anyone for that matter.
Before I could even say anything else the teacher started class. So I simply frowned at David once more before turning my attention to the teacher.
Once lunch arrived, I was heading to my usual table when someone popped up beside me.
“Hey Fayth!” Lavender said.
“What do you want?" I groaned.
She pouted, “I just wanted to say hello. Why do you automatically assume I want something?”
