"Kayla?" I asked, disbelief etched in every word. “Don’t tell me that guy is here for you!”
She smiled sweetly. “That guy happens to be my friend.” Without another word she walked up to the two strangers on the motorbike. Crisscrossing my way through the students milling the street during our school break, I followed my friend wondering what disaster she was getting into along with me in the process. I deliberately avoided looking at them as I stopped a little further away from Kayla as she immediately entered into conversation with the guys, hoping that their meeting would end soon.
It was nearly a month to the start of my semester at my new school and so far not a day has passed without a few surprises. To put it short, life at this co-ed school is way different than I had envisioned at first!
A deep voice interrupted my thoughts.
“So, who’s your friend here?”
I glanced up to meet a pair of hazel eyes staring into mine.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
My heart almost skipped a beat in its attempt to burst out of my chest. I couldn’t look away. He chuckled and I felt heat creep into my cheeks. Furious for making an utter fool of me I quickly turned to Kayla who had fortunately missed my embarrassing moment. She impatiently looked back at me and I realized she had just introduced me to them. I gave a small smile trying not to look into those mesmerizing eyes again.
Ugh. Stupid me! Just because he happened to be the most handsome guy I have seen does not mean that I have to go fall for him! Seeing the flirty smile he flashed at me, I vowed not to let that affect me. I could very well do without a guy in my life, thank you very much, let alone someone like him.
“Hey,” He spoke again, “seems like Kayla here forgot her manners. I am Jonas.”
My heart raced again. Luckily I was spared from giving an answer when another voice piped up.
“And Jim!” his friend barely spared me a glance as he scanned the crowd. I couldn’t help but mentally shake my head seeing his obvious attempt at checking out the girls.
“You’re hopeless!” Kayla told him with her usual laugh. “Now I see why you’re here!”
“Someone’s getting jealous.” He winked at her. “I am here just for you, babe.”
I saw her slap his arm jokingly, a smile forming on my lips. But then, a huge hand waved in front of me. Jonas.
“You are pretty quiet.” He stated.
“Guess I could say the same to you.”
“Well, between me and you, it’s better to stay out of that-“he pointed towards our friends “-they could go on for hours!”
I laughed at that. I have known Kayla only for a few days but I have never seen her as happy when she turned her attention on Jonas with a huff.
“Says the one who has been here for hours yet never bothered to let me know”, she narrowed her eye. “What excuse have you got this time?”
“I swear I didn’t mean to!” He raised his hands, backing away slightly. “You know how it is! It is Jim and the guys-they wouldn’t leave me alone.”
“Oh yeah, had we left you alone, you would still be sleeping, drowning in that drool of yours.” Jim retorted.
“Hey!” He protested but then joined in our laugh.
“Kayla, break is nearly over!” Noticing the dwindling crowd, I reminded her. “Shall I meet you in class? I need to go pick up some papers for Mr. Harris.”
“No, it’s alright, I’ll come with you.” Turning to the guys, she said. “I cannot say the same for you Jim but Jonas, I have missed you. You still owe me alright?”
“I’ll see you sooner than you think.” Jonas replied.
But before we walked away, he winked at me. The nerve of that guy! I thought as I felt my face flush once again.
“Hate is the beginning of love, my dear!” Jim called out.
“You wish!” Kayla called back.
I heard the roar of the motorbike as it sped off just as we entered through the school gates.
