RESCUE
THREE -
Mum left and I went out for a walk soon after. I needed the air and I needed to clear my head. Too much had gone on lately and I doubted a walk was going to help in the slittiest but it was worth a try. I was in the park near my house, kicking a few rocks and stones in my way. I was walking very slowly, I bet even an old man in his eighties could over take me at this pace. My eyes stayed fixed to the ground and my hands shoved into my pockets to prevent them from getting cold in the winter air. I sat down on a bench, just in front of me was a large lake which was almost frozen over, ducks struggling to swim around in it.
"Aston?"
My head slowly lifted at the sound of my name. A girl, looking around the same age as me, stood in front of me, grasping a little boy's hand who looked about three years old.
"Hi?" I said questioningly, wondering if this was a fan or someone I was supposed to know.
"You don't remember me, do you?" She laughed slightly and I regrettably shook my head, feeling bad.
"I'm not surprised with your busy life now," She giggled, "Its Nicole Green, we went to school together?"
Then it clicked, she was one of my many hooks up in high school but we were also really good friends around the time. We lost contact when we left school and I was thrown into the world of music and showbiz.
"Oh, Nicole! I remember, how could I forget?" I smiled slightly making her grin and laugh at me. It was the first proper smile I'd seen in a week and I'm honesty, it was nice to see one.
"Can we?" She asked, nodding to the space next to me.
"Yeah, sure," I nodded, sitting up and shuffling along the bench to make some space for her. She sat down and pulled the little boy onto her knee.
"Who's this little man?" I asked, smiling at the boy who looked terrified.
"This is Ryan, my son," She said, "Say hi Ryan, this is mummy's friend, Aston,"
"Hi," He said quietly, chewing on his glove.
"Nice to meet you buddy," I said before looking back at Nicole, "Son, hey?"
She smiled proudly and nodded, "Yeah, I can't believe it, me being a mum,"
"You married and all then?" I asked.
"Oh...no, his dad, well isn't around," She shrugged, her face falling and I felt guilty.
"I'm sorry," I bit my lip.
"Don't be silly, you didn't know," She smiled, adjusting Ryan's hat on his head as it was almost popping off.
"He was an accident but the best thing thats ever happened to me, being a parent is one of the greatest things you can experience," She spoke passionately as she looked down at her son with love written all over her face. My heart ached as I should be experiencing the feeling soon and with Hannah but that got torn away from me. I looked across the lake, sucking in a deep breath.
"Oh god," Nicole gasped, "Aston, I am so sorry,"
She must have realised what was happening and it hit her like ton of bricks.
"Its okay," I whispered.
"No its not, I should have thought before I said it. I can't even come close to imagining how you're feeling right now," She told me, rubbing my arm, "I really am sorry for your loss,"
How many times have I heard that lately?
"Thank you," I gulped.
"How've you been holding up?" She wondered. I almost laughed at her question because how was I meant to answer that? I hadn't been eating or sleeping properly for days and I was crying most of the minutes during the day.
"As well as anyone who has lost somebody can," I lied.
"I've never lost anyone that close to me so I can't imagine how you feel," She sighed sympathetically although I didn't want anyone's sympathy. I shrugged effortlessly, not sure what to say to her.
"I should get going," I said, slowly standing up, "It was nice seeing you,"
I turned on my heel and quickly went to walk off. It was sudden but I could feel the lump in my throat growing and I didn't want to cry in front of anyone.
"Aston, wait," She said but I only just about heard it.
"Hm?" I asked, turning round to look at her again.
"Take my number, I'd like to meet up again," She said.
"Erm.." I stuttered, not knowing how to answer. Of course I wanted to keep in contact with her but for some reason I felt bad getting another girl's number.
"I mean, only if you want to," She panicked, fiddling with the ends of her hair.
"Of course I will, here," I said, taking her phone off her . She smiled brightly, watching me type my number in and pass it back to her.
"I'll text you," She said and pulled me in for a hug.
"It was really nice to see you again," I told her, pulling back from the hug moments later.
"You too," She smiled.
"Bye mate," I said, ruffling Ryan's hair.
"Bye Aston," He said cutely which made me smile. We said our final goodbyes before parting and going our separate ways. I took a slow walk home again, taking my time as I knew sitting at home would make me feel worse. I flopped back onto the sofa, getting my phone out from my pocket to see I had a new message from an unknown number.
[Hi Aston, it's just me Nicole. Heres my number x].
I added her number into my phone and quickly text her back before putting my phone away and lying down on the sofa. I was going to at least try and get some sleep..
