The wind was cool and the street quiet. The only light the full moon overhead and a flickering street light a little further down from where I was standing. I stood on the sidewalk, staring up at the tall abandoned building in front of me. There was no one else around to see what I was about to do.
Quietly, I went inside and climbed the stairs, the sound echoing off the empty walls. The sound rang in my ears, seemingly in time with my heart beat. I let the sound accompany me to the roof, where the air seemed cooler than down on the sidewalk below.
I looked around the silent rooftop as I took a deep breath. No one around for miles. I allowed myself a soft smile as I walked across the concrete top.
Peering over the ledge, I watched the sidewalk far below. A stray cat wondered by, looking for a trash can to dig through. It disappeared down a darkened alley, tail flicking as it slid into the shadows.
"Beautiful night." A voice behind me said. I turned to find a tall, lanky man with mussed hair leaning against a blue police box I hadn't noticed before. I stared silently at him. I didn't think anyone would be here.
"You know," He said, pushing off the police box and coming over to stand beside me, "Living isn't all that bad. Especially in this time period. Now I could see you wanting to take a nose dive if you lived in the fourteenth century*. That was one of the worst parts of human history." I scowled at him as he rambled on, what the hell was he even talking about?
"No offense..." I interrupted, "But I don't see how this is any of your business."
"Well, I'm here, you're here at the same location at the same time," He replied, peering downwards, "So ergo that makes it my business. Bloody hell, that is a long drop."
"That's the point." I muttered darkly, wondering if I should jump now or attempt to run him off first.
The strange man remained quiet for a moment, gazing upwards at the stars, before asking in a more somber tone, "Why?"
"That's a broad question," I chuckled darkly, avoiding the question.
"Why do you want to die?" The man asked more pointedly. I blanched. How the hell could I explain every single terrible detail of my existence that led me to this rooftop ledge? Let alone tell it to a stranger?
"Why not just vanish?" He continued, gesturing at the sky with a hand, "There is a whole universe to explore out there." I stared up at the sky where he pointed, stars twinkling like little fairy lights.
Then he turned to me, offering a hand, "I'm the Doctor by the way." He gave me a small, crooked smile. Taken off guard, I took the hand offered to me. Gripping my hand, the Doctor took a step back, pulling me away from the ledge with him.
I looked back over my shoulder where I had been standing a moment before, "(Y/N)...my name is (Y/N)." I said the words quietly, as if standing so close to the edge had robbed me of my voice.
"Well, (Y/N)," The Doctor said with an easy smile, still holding my hand, "How would you like to see the universe?" I turned back to face him, giving him a skeptical look.
"The ruins of Egypt, the empire you humans have built across the galaxy, Barcelona...the world I mean." He rambled on.
"Human empire?" I said, "You say that as if you aren't human." That got him to shut up for a second.
"Well, I'm not," The Doctor said matter of factly, "I'm a time lord." I stared at him slack jawed.
"Like a time traveler?" I asked, pulling my hand from his.
"Exactly!" The Doctor said excitedly, turning and striding back over to the blue box, "Now come on, (Y/N), if you want to see what all of the universe has to offer, we better had get a move on!" I paused for a second, watching him. I had no one here that would miss me. Nothing for this world to remember me by.
"Well, come on!" The Doctor said, unlocking the door on the police box and opening it, "We haven't got all day!" I smiled softly, following him. As I stepped into the police box, I felt as though my old life was washing itself from my skin and my new life was waiting for me just inside.
