The tragedy of life is not that it ends so soon, but that we wait so long to begin it.
The hospital was decent enough but the fact that I was able to leave was even greater. I could have let a few tears pass at that alone but I didn't and Morgan was kind as he walked with me to the car. A thick and black SUV but that didn't put my mind at rest. The last time I was in one I met my family's killer for a second time. Not that the team must have thought about that when it was decided I would go back to the office in that car. Derek wasn't the one driving to my surprise as Emily sat in the front. A hand was on the wheel and the engine started as soon as my door closed and when Derek got in the other side of the car she was moving.
"Right, we will keep you updated but when we get back to the office we will let you rest for a while as we work some more." I nodded and looked out of the window. Grass was growing but it looked yellow as the sun had dried it out and I couldn't help but get so lost in it that I didn't let my eyes move from it. A hand on my stomach though as I thought about my little baby. They would have a messed up life as I was going to have to do it alone but I would love them so bad that it did not matter. They would feel as loved as I was.
When we got back to the office I was walked up to the room I normally sat in. No boards or case to see but I had a phone and charger so I could keep myself busy until needed. Not that it mattered as people or rather officers passed and I wondered about them as I knew nothing about them and yet some worked on my case. No acknowledgement would be found at this either.
After what felt like a life time but was an hour or so something was shouted and the whole BAU team had stood. Concern and also a few smiles seen as they let their hands grab the belts and jackets were put on as they prepared to leave. Something had happened and that was no secret as they worked quickly to get ready for what was about to go down.
"What has happened?" I asked with my nose in a pie I probably shouldn't have but it didn't matter as the man whispered about a lead. It wasn't much but it was more than I had expected as an answer from poor Hotch. He looked tired all the time but also so wide awake it was like he would never sleep but also like he never had slept before.I sat waiting. The desk had paper over it but I didn't care about what the paper had on it. The only part of my life that mattered was the part where the team all walked or ran in, it didn't matter, and they told me that all was fine. He was alive but also going to be in prison for a very long time. Like he deserved. A lesson would have to be leant and he also needed the help that they provided. He was a serial killer for a reason after all.
After another lifetime the team walked back into the room. The person that surprised me most was Emily as she had blood up her. She was quick to grab a bag and walk off. Probably to change and so I followed the team into their room with the board and facts on the case. Something had gone down and I had no clue what it was.
"What, what happened to, to Emily and to, that, um, the, um, man." I didn't realise that I was nervous as I asked quietly but Morgan smiled and stood up. One of his strong arms wrapped around me as he held me close to him.
"You are going to be safe now Ania." I wasn't sure of his response as he spoke like I should leave it but that was not like me. I had to know what had gone down and what I had caused.
"Is, uh, is Emily all right?" The slow and steady nods all synced down and after a second Emily was in the room and I looked around. Faces that I knew and some were well cared for as they worked so hard for me to be happy and safe.
"Is, is he safe? I mean, he can't have been hurt you guys don't do that sort of thing right? Emily was all bloody because of something else right?" The quiet and awkward silence surrounded me as I looked at the people in the room around me. They were kind and did care but they also scared me. They could do that to a person and no tears were shed.
"If I had died then none of this would have ever even happened. I wouldn't bring a child into my messed up life and he wouldn't be dead. Another mother and another father wouldn't have to be told about what happened to their child. He could have lived in the prison. It isn't much of a life but it is one." I couldn't help but cry as they watched me. I couldn't careless as they watched though."Ania, none of this is your fault and sure if you had died then this baby wouldn't have happened but you get to meet an amazing baby who will love you just as hard as you loved your parents and you get to love them as much as your parents loved you. This man may have changed your life but don't let his death hurt you like this. You are too good for this. Don't let a baby stop you from having a good career and don't let a job get between you and this baby." Garcia was a fountain of knowledge and I loved her for that. A hug started as Derek let me go and there I stayed for a while as I wept bitterly. My baby would have no dad but they would have me and that was more than enough for their life.
The end.
