"It's about time Nita! I've been calling you!" Josey said when I let myself into her apartment, dragging Jaime behind me.
Getting up from the couch, Josey placed our sleeping infant cousin, Mateo, in some sort of swing. I was supposed to be taking Jaime to the park for some alone time. At least that was what Josey thought, but I had my own agenda going that Josey's irritating ass didn't need to be in the know about.
"Yeah. Well, my phone died."
Not true but the shit might as well have been when it came to her. I had both her cell and house phone blocked. When I was ready to hear my sister's mouth, it would be on my terms.
"I figured as much since it just went to voicemail but you are going to have to keep your phone charged and answer my calls if we are going to do this, Nita."
I hated how she was less than two years older than me but talked to me like I was a damn child. She even changed the pitch in her voice.
"Mommy!" Jaime shouted once he'd quit rubbing at his eyes and realized where we were.
He'd fallen asleep in the car on the way over here and was still waking up.
Snatching his hand out of mine he ran to Josey who embraced him like they'd been apart for weeks instead of the few hours that it had been.
"Hey chico!" she crooned, causing my eyes to roll.
"If we are going to do this then you need to start correcting him when he calls you that!" I snapped.
Josey had been taking care of Jaime since I had him. He came at a bad time in my life and I had to do what I had to do. The arrangement was always meant to be temporary, though Josey acted like she forgot that shit all the time.
Josey also has custody of Mateo. His mom, our cousin Rayna, is bad off on meth. Mateo was born with it all in his system and the state was going to take him away. Rayna's mama ain't want nothing to do with a drug addicted baby and had already washed her hands of Rayna, so of course Josey had stepped in.
You see, Josey's womb is rotten and she can't have kids of her own so she made it a point to take care of everyone else's.
"Lower your voice Nita! You see I just got Mateo to sleep!" Josey whispered harshly, while checking to make sure he was still knocked.
I was surprised he wasn't crying like always. That was all the drug deprived thing ever did it seemed.
"And I'm sorry. Okay. But this...Me." Josey pointed towards her chest. "I'm all that Jaime knows, Nita. This is going to be a huge adjustment for all of us. I told you that from the beginning."
"It shouldn't be that much of a change! I told you I was coming back for my son and when I do come back, you got him over here calling you mommy!"
I didn't care if I woke up that baby! Fuck her! I leave my son in the care of family only to have them try and take my spot. On top of that, I knew she had been putting things in Jaime's head to turn him against me. He barley wanted anything to do with me and I knew my sister was behind it.
Mateo woke up and started going off, granting me an evil look from Josey before she went and scooped him up.
"You also told me you were going to be around, Juanita," she spoke over Mateo's screams. "That you just needed help, not that you needed me to take on the full parental responsibilities of raising your child. I had to do that.
Before you came back around, you hadn't even seen Jaime since he was 8 months old. You did nothing when I told you I was filing for custody. Now all of sudden you're coming around and want to be in his life?"
