"I'm back, One." Says Two.
Earth is so pretty. It's so pretty, and One feels as if they want to reach out and grasp the scenery, cradle it in their nonexistent hands and just bask in the glory of the sun, and everything is so beautiful--and the humans don't know it. They don't care, because their memories of being voices are only faint. They fade away.
One remembers.
One remembers being so many things. They were a serial killer, a damsel in distress, a turtle, a little girl, a teacher, a soldier, a king, a farmer, and so much more. One has been... So many things.
One wants to be a dog, next. Definitely, they will try to be a dog.
A dog ends up killing the serial killer, saving the damsel in distress, licking the turtle playfully, loving the little girl, caring for the son of the teacher, comforting the soldier, bowing for the king, helping the farmer, and... A dog has always been in One's lives.
There's a girl dying her hair light blue. All of it. She has a crush on that really shy kid in her class and she's going to ask them out tomorrow. She looks so nervous.
Hmm. That girl's hair looks nice. One hopes whatever gender they are next, they end up in a time period where they can dye it like that.
A different time period, perhaps...
Some of the voices around them fall silent, voices fading one by one as they see the light before their eyes and they reach out for it.
There's a preacher who has people banging on the doors of their church. The doors open and people are entering. They have guns. They have taken the preacher.
"One, I know you can hear me."
A deer is hit by a car, it is night time. The deer manages to get away, and the car has a dent in it, followed by several tufts of fur that are stuck in between the license plate and the car itself.
"One, come on. I know you're there." Two says, their voice echoing. Now it's just the two of them. All the other voices have already learned their lesson and decided to reincarnate, and after they both choose, the next batch of voices will come in.
"One, talk to me, please."
One is sure they have learned their lesson, can't they reincarnate now?
Ah, One realizes, I know what my lesson is.
"I am sorry for ignoring and being cruel in my past life. Please, forgive me." One says.
Yes... There's a white light. It's so warm.
"One, aren't we supposed to reincarnate together? I know you just decided, I can feel the change in the air. One, come on, please, wait for me..."
One notices that they can reach for this light. As their limb nears it, One feels the heat spreading across their body.
Oh, it's wonderful...!
"Answer me, One!" Two says, and their voice is lower. Rougher.
Are they angry? Oops. What a shame.
"Goodbye, Two." One says, and their voice fades just as they hear Two shout--no, scream.
"Dammit, One! I need to talk to you!"
One would smile, if they could.
There's no possible way that Two can talk to a dog, is there?
"... A Rottweiler sounds delightful." One whispers, embracing the hotness.
