Chapter Six: Cesar Learns Something New
After the half-assed apology Tenebris had thrown his way, Cesar wasn't exactly in the brightest mood. Sure, he had heard the regret the other boy had felt towards scaring him, but if he wasn't going to try and make amends, then neither was Cesar. The two had barely spent an afternoon together, and Cesar couldn't help but want to spend more time with the group of teens, but he didn't really see a point to staying at their little safe haven with them. He felt like he was intruding, the nap Tenebris had promised him earlier that evening completely absent from his mind.
If it wasn't for the huge bombshell that had been dropped on him recently and the aching in his chest from not only something trying to suck out his soul but also from someone making him think he'd witnessed a murder, he would have run out of that treehouse faster than a child to an ice cream truck. He hadn't planned on confessing his abilities to Emmet but seeing as he had basically straight up told him he could hear his thoughts he didn't really have another option. Emmet had abilities, along with the rest of his friends apparently, after all, so it wasn't like they were going to turn him in to the authorities or something along those lines.
̈̈̈ Right. Well, I think I'm gonna head out.¨ He tried to say, brushing past the group of teens congregated in the main room of the house. He heard more than saw the confusion they were feeling, thoughts of surprise bombarding his mind. He had hoped Emmet wouldn't tell the others about his ability. The last thing he needed was a group of people who barely knew him to know that he could read their minds, especially a group of people that seemed to be able to do weird things. His head was still spinning from Emmet ́s revelation, the heat of the fireball the other boy had conjured in his palm still burning his cheeks.
"Um, no.¨ Elise said, hands once again on her hips in a similar fashion to earlier. ¨We've got to talk. Listen, I know you have no reason to think you need to spill out your deepest darkest secrets to us, but I think we may be able to help each other." The mint-haired girl said, causing Cesar to furrow his brows.
"I, uh, appreciate it, but my dad is expecting me home.¨ He lied, shifting on his feet. ¨It was nice meeting you all, and I appreciate Mr. Tall-Dark-And-Annoying saving my life, but this has been a bit of an eventful day and I would like to get home and have a quiet evening with my bird.¨
He would be lying if he said he wasn't excited by the prospect of knowing there were others out there like him, but he wasn't lying when he said he wanted to go home and hang out with Ax. He was overwhelmed and keyed up, and he knew that Ax would be able to calm him down like he always did after a nightmare. Plus, Ax would be psyched to know about the group of teens currently hiding away in the trees.
Elise heaved a sigh and both Solis and Emmet put down their game controllers, turning in the direction of the conversation with faces of interest. If he didn't know better, Cesar would think that Emmet sincerely had no idea what Elise was talking about.
¨You have a bird?¨ A quiet voice coming from the corner of the room said suddenly, causing Cesar to jump. He guessed that this must have been the Quinn he had heard about earlier. She looked so sweet that, although he had no idea exactly what Tenebris had done to her to warrant an apology, he wanted to whack the taller boy upside the head for daring to ever hurt her.
"Er, yeah.¨ He said, turning his back on the girl to look at Emmet in confusion. He could swear the girl hadn't been there before.
̈That's beside the point." Elise sighed, suddenly looking tired. She gestured vaguely at Emmet and fixed her gaze on Cesar with those intimidating eyes of hers. ̈ ̈Emmet here told me about what you confessed to him earlier. He also told me that he showed you his...ability to conjure fire into his hand.¨ She said.
