The Vegetarian & The Hunter

Chapter 2.

I turned the key and the car rumbled to life. Finally the day is over, im done with Mark and now I can just go home relax and maybe make plans with Jamie later.

I smiled.

I pulled out of the parking lot, turned on the radio and as I was about to drive off Jamie came running up yelling “STOP!!!!”

“Need a ride?” Again…

She breathed in and released “Actually…We need a ride”

“We?” oh god please not…

“Yeah, me and Mark”

I stared at her

“Please he only lives a couple houses down from you”

You’ve got to be kidding me. My teeth clenched.

I sighed “Fine, get in”

She waved Mark over. She rode shot gun while he sat in back.

“So wheres your car?”

“In the shop again” Jamie sighed

“You need a new car, your truck isn’t very reliable”

She laughed “A new car? No way! I love my truck”

“What kind of truck?” Mark asked jumping into a conversation he is not wanted in

“Uh I don’t know? Just a truck?” I laughed

“Its old and beat up that’s the kind” I added

Jamie laughed and Mark just nodded. At least he shut up.

The ride was silent besides the low voice from the radio. We finally reached Jamie’s house and she promised to text me later.

Awesome. Im alone. In a car. With Mark.

Could this day get any worse?

“So what house are you?” I looked at him through the mirror

He cleared his throat “Oh um the gray one”

I nodded

“And you?”

“Oh the blue one”

There’s a couple blue houses in my neighborhood so maybe he won’t know where I live…hopefully

“The one with the huge ass tree?”

Shit.

“Mhm”

“Kool”

“Yup”

“You know we could be friends” My eyes darted back to him and his eyes met mine

“Or we could not” I said

“True but I’ve heard opposites attract”

I raised an eyebrow “I think you should double check your sources, their unreliable”

All he did was smile until I dropped him off.

He didn’t say thank you, so before I drove off I yelled “YOUR WELCOME!?”

He replied “No, you’re welcome”

What the hell does that mean?

I blew it off and parked in my driveway. My mom’s home. Early. Weird.

I walked in laid my bag on the floor and headed to the kitchen for a juice

“Hey honey” my mom’s chipper voice filled the room

“Hey”

“How was school?”

I opened the fridge

“The usual”

I grabbed a V8

“Well that’s good”

I took a drink and closed the fridge

“Yeah so why are you home?”

“Well…I decided to take some time off to hang with the family”

“Hang?” I laughed

“Oh yes, and before you go do your teen stuff, don’t make any plans because i invited the Davis’s over for a welcome dinner. At 7”

“Why?” I said a bit too harshly

“Because young lady, they are new and I think they would like to be our friends, I expect you to be on your best behavior and plus they have a teen son about your age so maybe you guys can be friends”

“They’re a hunter family mom, I hate them”

“You only dislike something about them, just because they kill animals doesn’t mean you should hate everything about them. I raised you better. Get to know them”

I sighed and headed upstairs.

Be friends with their family?

Be friends with hunters?

Be friends with Mark Davis?

Yeah, when im dead maybe.
