The tension was thick in the air as soon as I’d walked into the building. It was as clear as day that I was the new girl, walking in perfectly on time for my first day and all, but that was only because I’d caught the early train to be punctual. At least I’d walked into the right building.
I took a seat in the black leather lounge set out in front of the receptionist’s desk, presumably where I’d be working for the next fourteen weeks if I was lucky. Otherwise I’d be working on the filing which wouldn’t be very fun in my mind. Although, what isn’t fun about working in a Record Company. ‘Red Umbrella Records’ had agreed to take me on for their internship early in July, but the next available time wasn’t until now, early August. The internship was fourteen weeks long and I’d be working five days a week with minimum wages, which did suck considering I lived with my roommate and her boyfriend and we’d all agreed to split the rent evenly, and this would barely scrape me by. But for the time being to be able to work int he music industry was good enough for me.
A man in a clean-cut suit came into the reception area through the two double doors at the far end of the room looking at me warmly. “Cassie.” He greeted me. This man, who I could only presume was David, the manager of the company, held out his hand for me to shake. No doubt his handshake was firm and strong; the company was in good hands. “I’m David, your boss.” He explained as I got to my feet and nodded. “Welcome to Red Umbrella Records. It’s a pleasure to have you here for the internship, you’ve arrived just in the nick of time as we’re holding a couple of music festivals while you’re here so we’ll be needing all the help we can get.”
He led me back through the double doors to a series of desks all set out in cubicles, but there were only a dozen or so. “Hopefully you already know that we do have two recording studios upstairs and play host to a fair few people who are currently have pretty big names worldwide.” He explained as we made our way across the back section of the building, David just pointing things out as we went past. “Right now though, Janet will be looking after you and advising you of what you have to be doing until further notice. It was very nice to meet you.” He gestured to across the room where a tired-looking woman was sipping a cup of coffee next to a couple of filing cabinets.
I made my way over to the blonde and she looked up form her cup at me, not so much judgementally as curiously. “You must be Cassie. Young, pretty, short, the perfect receptionist.” She commented.
“The perfect receptionist is short?” I asked questionably, raising an eyebrow.
She laughed and shook her head. “Oh no, that was just my general overview of you.” She explained and then held out her hand. “I’m Janet.”
“Well you already know who I am, clearly.” That sounded a whole lot nicer in my head, but she didn’t even seem to notice my would-be rudeness.
“As receptionist you’re just answering calls and making meetings sorting out the calendar which I must admit needs more than a little bit of attention.” Janet described, listing stuff off on her fingers. Already I had a headache from all this stuff I’d have to take care of, all the while I’d have to sit at that blasted desk practically being the face of the company.
“Got it.” I answered simply, putting aside all my doubts knowing that this would hopefully start me off for a decent career.
Janet pushed herself away from the cabinet, leaving her coffee there and looked me over once more, I could tell that she was making a quick judgement which I was sure she’d share with her coworkers as soon as I was out of earshot. Her look made me feel very self conscious about myself, I was just trying to make a good impression by looking sensible, but from the look I’d received it seemed as though I’d overdressed. “Let me show you where you’ll be working. I’m sure David has shown you where everything else is?” I nodded, but she didn’t pay me any mind about my answer. “You seem like you’ll fit right in anyway so I could just leave you to it.”
