tooru had always been able to see the strings of fate.
due to this, she's always lived a colourful life.
white string for broken up couples, green for rivals, yellow for platonic, pink for romantic, and grey for unrequited love. (and black string for people whose soulmate had already passed, though tooru never liked seeing those hang limp and cut short around people's pinkies.)
and then there were the red strings. tooru had never seen a red string.
those were reserved for soulmates who were really meant to be, life after life, death after death. if there were past lives, they were still destined. if there was afterlife, they were destined even there.
those kinds of soulmates were extremely rare. yeah, maybe some people have a pink string, maybe a couple white, but those were common. those were normal, everyday romances. not destiny at play.
so, tooru was more than surprised to see two of her unsuspecting classmates be connected by none other than a red string.
yaoyorozu momo and iida tenya, the class representatives of class 1-a and the parent duo no one really asked for but got anyway. tooru expected them to be a nice match, but not red-string-nice.
tooru being tooru, she observed the pair closely. was this red string thing really special enough to be as rare as it was?
the invisible girl notices a lot. how momo and iida were awkward with each other at first, but slowly grew to be more comfortable around each other. how iida's eyes lingered on momo's hand for a moment too long, or how momo drew invisible lines with her eyes between her and iida's pinky fingers.
she saw it all, and she saw the way the two fell in love.
there was no specific moment where it happened. the two spent ample times with each other. from working on projects to battling villains to saving bakugou, momo and iida got closer as the year went by.
tooru could basically see the two gravitate towards each other over time. it was a quiet romance, not one to garner much attention.
in fact, it seemed as if she was the only one who noticed when they started to stick together like glue to paper. when the lingering looks and longing smiles became more conscious and warm. when the desks were pushed closer together. when the pinky fingers were linked.
maybe a red stringed fate wasn't the most extravagant of them all. their red string was gradual and subtle, but sweet.
their destiny was set in the stars for them, but they seemed to figure it out for themseves anyway.
