Chapter 1-Epic Fail

I walked across the brown, dying lawn towards my house. I could smell the food my mom was cooking for dinner. Chicken and dumplings. Yum. I opened the door to find my mom sitting at the dining room table with her reading glasses on the tip of her nose. She had a worried look on her face. I decided not to bother her and started up the stairs.

"Avery Jane Martin, you get back here, young lady." I slowly walked back down the stairs. She was mad. What did I do this time? Great."Yes ma'am?" I said. She looked at me. She looked sad, not angry. She handed me the paper she was reading.

"Please explain this," she said in a very stiff voice. I looked at the paper and saw that it was my report card. Oh no. I looked over it and found why she was mad.I was failing in all of my classes but two. The two classes I wasn't failing in was history and English. I was barely passing in English but I was doing pretty good in History. I don't know why, but History just kind of comes naturally to me.

"Um, well I'm not really understanding any of this. Sorry, Mom. I'm trying my best." I looked down, not wanting to see her face. I knew she was disappointed, but I really was trying my best. It was another new school and more new teachers.I have failed classes at other schools before so my mom had to keep switching schools. This was probably my fifth school.

"Sweetheart, I know it's hard switching schools but you're thirteen now. Please try harder." I lifted my head and gave her a hug.

"Okay, Mom. Are we going to switch schools again?" I wasn't really sure if I wanted to or not. I didn't like the school I was at very much but it was hard adjusting to new schools.

"We'll finish of the year where we're at, but we'll look all the other schools over. Meanwhile, I'm going to hire a tutor for you until you can get your grades up. I want you to pass all of these classes by the end of the year." My heart sunk. A tutor? No way. The last thing I needed was a nerd trying to teach me the square rootof 576 divided by 9 multiplied by 17. I had too many things on my mind right now. Things like my dad. I never knew my dad and I have been trying to find him for a few months. I have found a few things, but nothing that will help much.

"Mom, you can't do this to me. Please don't get me a tutor," I begged. "I will try harder. I'll do anything. Just please forget the tutor."

"No, Avery. I have made up my mind and you will have a private tutor." Oh well. It was worth a shot. At least it's private. That way the Brats wont know about it. The Brats are the bullies at school. They're the typical bullies, rich girl followed by a bunch of adoring wimps hoping to look more popular. What makes them stand out is that they have a very colorful vocabulary.

I walked to the oven and got my dinner. I ate it quickly so I could go and think. When I got to my room, I flopped down onto the bed and closed . I didn't fall asleep, but I dozed off for a few minutes. When I was back , I got up and went to the computer. I decided that if I was going to have a tutor, I would pick it, and it would be a non-nerdy girl. It would be easier for me if it was a girl because it would be easier for me to understand things. I sat down and turnedon the computer. I searched for different tutors and found nothing. Nada.Great. Now my mom would probably choose the worst possible tutor anyone could get.
