Jenna continued looking through the books, but went in a slower pace. her face became calm again, and her blush pink cheeks glowed.
I walked up to her again and sat on the nearby desk," do you want my help?" I asked.
She nodded and continued until the teacher came back.
"Alright everyone, lets sit down now," Mrs.Olivent ordered.
She brought in the desk and placed it in the back corner of the class, " for now you will have to sit there," she looked at Jenna.
For another two hours, we sat in class and learned about neurotransmitters and acetylcholine. It was long, but I at least understood what she was saying.
The bell rang at 2:05, and everyone in school was eager to leave. Including me, but something stopped me.
I walked over to Alina's locker and found her taking out some chemistry books. "Alina, are you staying after school?" I asked.
She nodded her head " yea, I need to stay after with Mrs. Talt."
I looked over her shoulder to see if anyone was walking down the hall, " could you come with me for about ten minutes, I need your help." she checked her iPhone and saw the time, "yep, I can make it."
I snatched her hand and headed back to Mrs.Olivent's room.
I reached for the door knob, but Alina stopped me and shook my shoulder. "Why are we going into her room? What if she's there?" she asks.
I took her hand and glided it off my shoulder, "she's not gonna be here. she has a meeting for about thirty minutes."
I gave her a nod, and opened the door. We need to look for something, something different ""Different?" Alina asks.
I lifted my finger and pointed to the books in the back of the room, "Jenna was looking for something in there, and she looked desperate, I want to find out what it is."
Alina put her hands on her hips and stared at me, "you called me for this? I thought it would actually be something important, not just easing your suspicion."
"Please." I asked. "just for ten minutes"
"You do realize that we're not allowed to be in the teachers classroom after school right? Going in without permission is like volunteering for cleaning duty."
"Yes, and."
She dropped her down then sprang back up. "Fine, but only if you help me with chem."
I smiled and walked over to the books."Look for something odd or out-of-the-ordinary, or just, you know, weird. "
I looked through the middle pile while Alina went through the left. I flipped through the pages and found out something interesting. All the books had different smells. One smelled like lavender, and the other smelled the an old dusty house, but I still didn't find what I wanted.
"Do you see anything?" I asked.
"Nope," she replies.
I went back to my job and kept hunting. There were approximately twenty books per pile and there were five piles. We weren't gonna finish. I kept scanning back forth, and even managed to pick out small bookmarks and pieces of paper that people had left over the years, but I found nothing that was special.
"Hey Naomi, can you help me open this book? I feel like it's been glued" Alina breaks in.
"Yea," I answered "give me a sec." I reached over and grabbed another book, and then another, and another.
"Hey, are you coming?" She asked again.
"Yea, I'm coming. Just wait a sec."
"Naomi you literally said that two minutes ago, and if you want a mysterious book the one in my hand is your best bet."
My interest was sparked. "Let me see." I walked over to her and took the book out of her hands. I tried to open it, but it wouldn't budge. "It's sealed shut." I pondered.
I tried pulling it open again, but it didn't work. "Hey Alina, you pull that side, and I pull this one." She nodded her head and we played tug of war. Our boots kept slipping and our fingers looked like blood was going to splurt out of them.
After about a minute of intense exercise, we both let go and fell to our knees.
"Why won't it budge?" Alina panted.
I looked over to the book and picked it up. "I don't know, but I'll take it home and find out."
"Will the teacher allow you?"
"She won't notice one book gone."
We both shrugged and sat down until something caught our attention. The sound of something tapping.
"Hey Alina, do you hear that?" I whispered.
She looked at me and pointed to the door.
Cautiously, we both moved forward till we noticed where the sound was coming from. It was outside, Mrs. Olivent was coming back.
