"Boys, let's have some fun. Don't hold back, this is fucking LA!" Nogla hollers as he makes his way into the club. Behind him are Brock, Brian, Tyler, Jonathan, Evan, Ryan and Luke. The last two trail at the back of the group.
"I'm telling you now that I'm going to get fucked up. I shouldn't have drunk so much earlier. I have self-restraint problems," Ryan blabbers to Luke. His drunkenness is already apparent.
"Don't worry, I'll keep an eye on you," Luke promises with a smile.
"Thanks, Luke." Ryan places a hand on his forearm and Luke's heart skips a beat when he gives it a squeeze. They stand there like that for a second longer before Ryan is eagerly pulled away by Brian. He shoots Luke an apologetic smile as he disappears into the crowd.
Luke decides to keep to himself and sits at the bar top, sipping a beer. He isn't a dancer or even much of a drinker. He doesn't mind getting slightly buzzed but getting completely wasted always leads to him doing stupid things that he regrets as soon as he regains sobriety. He'd learnt that the hard way.
He looks across the bar top and spots Evan also sitting alone. The Asian's gaze is not-so-subtly fixed on Delirious amongst the sea of people and Luke makes his way to sit beside him.
"Why aren't you out there?" He gestures to the dance floor.
"Not my scene," Evan shrugs. "I don't do too good in crowds. How are you supposed to enjoy being in that?" He pulls a face at the horde of people.
"I feel you, man."
They both hear their names being called and look over to see Jonathan frantically waving at them. "I can't believe that fuck actually convinced me to drop everything and head out here," Evan laughs.
"You're telling me." It's July 1st and Jonathan had decided two days ago that he wants to celebrate Independence Day with his friends. Those that were available on such short notice, anyway. "He didn't even ask me," Luke continues. "He just turned up to my house yesterday and told me to pack my bags."
"He's lucky we put up with him."
"I couldn't agree more."
They'd arrived in LA earlier that day and had travelled to their four-bedroom Airbnb. It isn't anything spectacular but it had been the only suitable place available and so to the gang, it's a bargain. After they'd dropped their bags there, they'd celebrated their reunion with some alcohol and then made their way to this club.
As his conversation with Evan lulls, Luke takes a swig of his beer and watches the rest of their friends move on the dance floor. Nogla dances unabashedly, his long limbs flailing around as Tyler and Brian egg him on. Brock looks rather embarrassed when Jonathan bumps his shoulder and shouts something but Luke's gaze lingers on one friend in particular, one arm in the air as he drunkenly sways from side to side. A huge, intoxicated grin sits on Ryan's face and a bottle in his other hand. Luke chuckles as Ryan bumps into another guy but the smile falls when he notices the man turns to Ryan and starts to talk heatedly.
"I'll be right back, Evan." He doesn't wait for his reply before he pushes past people and grabs Ryan's arm, taking in the frown on his face. He turns to the man he'd bumped into, who stands a good couple of inches above Luke and even more so above Ryan. "He's drunk, man. There's no need to shout at him."
"Fuck you. He hit me," the man growls. Luke catches a whiff of his breath and the pungent smell of alcohol overpowers his senses.
Luke coughs. "Listen here buddy, you're drunk. Stop trying to cause a scene when nothing happened." The man grits his teeth and whips his middle finger up at the pair before walking away.
