~Zoey's POV~
Staring out the window at the passing trees, I wonder about my new family. "Penny for your thoughts?" Nicky says, glancing at me from behind the steering wheel.
"Just wondering about my new family... Can you tell me more about them?" I ask. "Well, they knew your parents." Nicky says, turning onto a different street. She leaned forward in her seat and brushed the hair out of her eyes, it was misting outside, and this car had crappy windshield wipers. "Really?" I ask, interested. "Yes, they were... Well, friends."
"They went to the same school, lived on the same street-" I cut her off. "Okay, I don't need to hear their life story." I say, sighing out of disappointment and slumping back in my seat, going back to staring out the window.
I've been jumping from foster home to foster home since I was five, what would be different about this one? Still... I couldn't help but feel nervous.
"Zoey, I know that your parents trusted them." Nicky says, glancing at me. I sigh as the tears well up in my eyes. "Please don't talk about them." I whisper, feeling a lump forming in my throat. Nicky sighs, "Oh Zoey, I'm sorry..." She says as she reaches one of her hands over to rub my back. I had to lean forward so she could even reach my back, since it was pressed against the seat. I felt a single tear run down my cheek.
"I-it's... It's okay." I say, taking deep breaths and closing my eyes. I taught myself a long time ago how to stop myself from crying. I told myself it was weak to cry in front of people.
"Sweetie, just rest. I will wake you when we are there, okay?" Nicky says as she gently caresses my cheek with the back of her fingers."Okay." I say and recline the seat, closing my eyes and listening to the quiet patter of raindrops on the roof of the car.
---
"Zoey... Zoey? Zoey!" Nicky has been trying to wake me up for the past ten minutes. "ZOEY!" She screams in my ear, I don't even flinch. "Ugh." Nicky sighs, and I resist the urge to smile. A loud whistle pierces through the air, also piercing my eardrums. I jump up, slamming my head on the sun visor. I hold my head and glare at Nicky, my jaw clenched. "OW!" I say whilst rubbing my head. "I tried to wake you!" Nicky says with amusement in her eyes. I internally growl at her amusement. Yes, I growled. Did I forget to mention I'm not entirely human? Haha, oops.
"I heard you the first time! I just wanted to sleep!" I said unbuckling my seat belt. "Oh... Well, we're here." Nicky says pointing to the house in front of us. More like castle, holy shit!
"I know right?" Nicky says with a big smile plastered on her face. I said that out loud, oops. Someone clears their throat and I look away from the huge house to see a man with his arm wrapped around a woman.
"Zoey, meet your new parents!" Nicky says happily. "Hi, new parents..." I say smiling awkwardly, trying to act perky.
The woman laughs while the man looks confused. "Hun, welcome to the family." She says opening her arms for a hug. Uh oh, not a big hugging person. Before I can do anything, however, I am engulfed in a bone crushing hug. Wow, she is strong for a human.
I hear myself wheeze as 'Amy' literally forces the air out of my lungs."God, Amy, don't suffocate the poor girl." The man says before pulling the woman off of me.
The Gummy Bear Song rings through the air, and I immediately laugh, my eyes focusing on Nicky as she reaches for her phone. She still hasn't changed that, huh?
