"Puppies and Kittens"

Penny's POV

I've spent 2 years alone, I'm 18 now. I travel a lot. I don't spend very long in one place, i'm currently in New York.
I've collected dozens of spray paints, I like to paint a little mural with my name on it everywhere I go. I keep all of them in the messager bag I found on day one.
I reached into my bag pulled out a mini bag of ruffles. I started munching as I walked, my big bag bouncing on my hip as I proceeded.
I followed the road going where ever it wants to take me. Suddenly I heard the roar of a vehicle coming my way. I focused on the black truck and saw 2 people in front, 3 in the back and 2 in the dump. They could easily kill me.
As they drove by I saw an old man, he had long white hair and beard. He looked familiar. Wait..........Doc!?
I ran after the truck. Seconds later the truck skidded as it stopped. Doc jumped out of the back seat and ran to me. I ran to him and jumped in his arms. He lifted me off the ground as he hugged me, I was light because of having less food.
He kissed my forehead as he let me down. "Oh my zombie Jesus, I can't believe it! I never thought I'd see you again!"
"Me too! I though you were dead!" I yelled back happily.
I hugged him again and finally acknowledged the group of people stand behind Doc.
An African-American lady cleared her throat. "Doc? Who's this?" She asked.
"Oh right, guys this is Penny! My granddaughter!" Doc said, introducing me to them all. The first person to say hello was a girl with red hair, she was just a centimetre shorter than me and really pretty.
"Hey! I'm Addy." I smiled and waved to her. Next was the darker woman, she had long dark brown hair and brown eyes. "Lieutenant Roberta Warren." She says sticking her hand out, I shook it and gave her a salute. She smiles showing her pearly white teeth. I turn to another person, it's a man, "Mack." He has blonde hair and blue eyes. I nod smiling. I see another man, he's taller and has brown hair, "Sargent Charles Garnett, Georgia National Guard." I nod saluting him, smiling. He laughs.
"What about you two?" I ask point to the only 2 people who haven't introduced themselves.
"Lieutenant Mark Hammond. And this is Murphy." I salute to Hammond and look at Murphy, he looked as if he was trying to hide himself. I smiled at him and patted his back making him flinch.
"We need to keep moving." Hammond suddenly bursts out. "To where exactly? And why?" I ask. "Abandoned high school, at the Tappan Zee Bridge. Hammond is on a mission for the U.S government, Murphy here is the only known survivor of a zombie bite and carries antibodies in his blood for a cure to the zombie virus." Warren answered. "You guys don't mind if I tag along?" I asked, gripping my bag. "Any friend of Doc, well granddaughter in your case, is a friend of ours." Warren told me. I nodded and smiled, I really like this woman.....she reminds me of mom... I jumped in the dump after Addy and Mack. The rest piled into the truck and we took off.
A while later we arrived at our destination. Me and Addy has just clicked, its like we've been best friends for years! Mack is cool, he's chill. I learned with in the first 5 minutes of the ride they were dating. Mostly because of the kissing and touching.
Anyway, Warren stopped the truck. And Murphy jumped out of the truck to let Hammond out. I hear Hammond tell Murphy to get back in the truck. He seems like a bit of a dick to him.
We all watch as Hammond slowly walks over to the school, his gun raised. He makes it to a crashed van and Murphy yells out the window, "Is it them?" He doesn't answer, so I ask, "Is it them?!.....wait who's "them"?". "Hammond's reinforcements." Addy answers, looking over my shoulder.
"Yeah." I head Hammond's rough voice call out.
Murphy jumps out of the truck to go piss and the rest of the team jumps out of the truck, me Addy and Mack stay in the dump. I keep a close eye on the high school. Seems a bit weird.....where are his reinforcements. Garnett walks up to Hammond, gun in hands, Hammond makes an announcement, "My reinforcements are dead." That explains the emptiness.
Hammond continues, "We need to make a quick search for survivors and supplies." He then yells to Murphy, who is still peeing, "You! Zip it up, and stay close to me."
"Hey, where'd all the Z's go?" Addy spoke up. "Moving on, like locust." Doc answered.
"Yeah, but they'll be back." Hammond then started to give out orders, "Garnett and Warren, you clear the building," They nod at each other as he continues, pointing at the four of us still in by the truck, "And you 4, check the vehicles."
We nod and get out of the truck.
Warren and Charles go towards the building and me, Doc, Addy and Mack, check around outside.
As I walked I could sense someone or something watching us, years of the apocalypse really improved my senses. I tried to ignore the feeling as I searched. We shoot many surrounding zombies and go around the back of the building.
I spot a cage surrounded by Z's, me being in front, I say, "Heads up.", i hold up my sniper, ready to fire at any Z that try's to eat our brains.
"What are they after?" Addy asks. I look at her in the corner of my eye and say, "One thing." "Brains." We day at the same time.
I take out my knife and start mercing the Z's, the others doing the same. Mack kills the last Z and try's to speak to the girl In the cage, "Hey." He gets no response and tries again, banging on a bar of the cage.
"Hey, you alright?" No response again, so he goes to the cage door, opens the lock with his pipe and steps inside.
"Careful, she might be dead." I say, gripping my knife tighter. He kneels down next to her, touching her shoulder.
In a flash they're standing up and the girl has a knife to Mack's throat.
Addy panics holding a hand out, "Whoa, whoa! Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey!" Doc laughs and looks to me, "Well she ain't dead." I chuckle and elbow him in the stomach, not enough to hurt him.
"Hey. Hey, it's okay. Hey. It's okay. We're good people. We just saved you." Addy speaks quickly.
She hesitates, but let's go of him, backing away. I can finally get a good look at her, she has long black hair and dark brown eyes. But what she wearing really confuses me. She's wearing a black crop-top/tank top and short green shorts.
"Sorry, I didn't know where I was." She takes a sharp breath, "I must've fallen asleep." I was shocked and asked the question that was on all of our minds, "Well, how long you in the cage for?"
She looks at me kinda sadly and answers, "Two days."
"Come with us, we have a group. They have some food and water." I say kindly, smiling at the girl, she looks like a twig.
She smiles at me and nods. Her and Mack step out of the cage and I take the lead back to the team.
