I look at myself in the mirror with no emotion and watch as a single tear rolls down my cheek. I quickly wipe it away. Fighters don't cry. I stand up a bit taller, roll my shoulders back, and lift my head.Pathetic. Worthless. Nothing.
The words ring in my ears. I shut my eyes tightly and my breathing becomes unsteady. I bring my hands up to my temples and try to make it go away. Try to make his voice go away. It seems as though the world is getting louder and louder and louder until..
Footsteps. My eyes shoot open. Someone's coming.
As I hear their hand touch the doorknob, I transport to my bed. It was only a few feet away but transporting is much quieter. I don't use my transportation abilities often, mostly because no one here knows I've almost mastered them. I grab the book on my bed and act like I'm reading it. The door opens and, once I see who it is, I let out the breath I was holding in.
"Jeez, Rose. You scared me half to death!"
She giggles as she quickly shuts the door behind her and makes her way toward me. "Sorry! I had to come see you," She sits down next to me.
Rose. My best friend and my doctor. She works at this hellhole and has saved my life numerous times. She's a few years older than me but the smartest person I have ever met by far. Rose keeps me updated on what's going on outside the building and gossips about what's going on inside the building.
One of her hands remains behind her back. "What's that?"
"What's what?" She tried to play dumb, but when she saw I wasnt buying it, she sighed and slowly brought her hand into sight. "Happy 18th birthday, Amora," Rose smiled sweetly and waited for me to respond.
I look at it for a moment until I realize that it's a cupcake. My eyes went wide and I toss my book to the side. "Where did you get that from?" Here at Barlow Tech, they feed me slob everyday. It's all I know. Rose is the one that sneaks different kinds of outside food into my room. I go to grab the cupcake, but Rose pulls it away from me.
"Nope! You know what I need first." She puts her hand out and waits for me to respond. I roll my eyes and put my hand on top of hers, my palm facing up. She takes a scalpel and alcohol wipe out of her scrubs. Rose is the only doctor here that sanitizes her equipment. The other doctors don't care about me. Honestly, I believe they'd rather see me die. I watch her put the cupcake down on my bed so her hands are free. Once the scalpel is sanitized, she grabs my hand again and looks up at me. "Ready?"
"Whatever." I'm used to this. Rose slices my hand open everyday and everyday she asks me if i'm ready. I barely feel it anymore.
She glides the scalpel across my hand and I don't even wince. We both watch as the cut reveals my blue blood. Before any of it can spill out, the cut closes. "Wow! That's a new record, Amora! Soon, your skin will be impenetrable!"
"Cool. Can I have my cupcake now?"
She silently nods and I immediately grab the cupcake and I begin to stuff it in my mouth. "Look. I know they don't treat you so good here but-" I stop to glare at her. "Okay.. Yeah. They treat you like complete garbage here. But... We're making new discoveries each day. You're the only one that has survived," Rose gets up and opens the door to grab my chart.
I speak with half the cupcake still in my mouth, "They literally keep me in the basement of a huge facility. Everyday for the past 18 years, people walk in and out of this building to work upstairs and don't even know what they're doing down here. I'm a freaking trained assassin that's also a superhuman. And no, I wasn't the only one to survive. That other kid escaped. I was stupid enough to stay here and continue my treatment." She sits back down next to me and starts writing things on the charts.
I go back to eating the other half of my cupcake. "Mr. Barlow is very hopeful with-"
"I don't care what Tom thinks," I interrupt Rose.
She looks up at me and smiles. It wasn't until then that I realized I was talking with my mouth full of cupcake. She reached up and wiped icing off my face with her sleeve. Her smile faded and her brows furrowed. "I don't understand... We administered the last of the serum to you this morning. It's supposed to be the end of the treatment. Your body is changing. Like your brain, nerves, blood, even your heart. Your abilities should be showing by now.."
"About that.." She gave me a confused look. "I've had my abilities for a while now."
"What? I don't understand?"
I sigh and stand up. Here goes nothing. My feet slowly begin to lift off the ground and my hands glow a bluish purple color.
"Oh. My. Gosh. This is amazing, Amora!"
I lower back down. "Please don't tell him or the other doctors." She gives me a wary look. "Promise me." I put my hand out. Rose looks at it for a moment before softly grabbing my forearm and me grabbing hers.
"I promise."
My head snaps to the door. "He's coming."
"I see you also have super hearing..." Rose moves away from me and acts like she looking at my charts. I sit back down and grab my book again.
I hear the doorknob turn and then the door opens.
"Hello, Mr. Barlow! Just doing her daily checkup." He doesn't even look at Rose. Disgusting.
I glance next to me and see the cupcake wrapper. I wave my hand over it and make it disappear quickly.
He clears his throat, and I put my bookmark in my book before standing up. "Subject 51601 I-"
"Actually, Tom... I have a name." Subject 51601. 5/16 is my birthday. The 01 part is the year they started training me to become a weapon. The first five years I was here, Tom kept me in the penthouse level of the building. He's really just the worst human being ever.
He takes a few steps closer to me. I watch as he lifts his hand and slaps me as hard as he can. My face whips to the side but my body stays solid. As I said, he's the worst.
I start laughing and slowly turn my head to face him again. He looks pissed off. Good. "Nice one," I say sarcastically.
"You disgust me... There's no hope for you. There never has been. But most of all, you're ungrateful. I raised you when no one else wanted to! I made you into who you are today!"
"You made me into a monster! I hate you." For a moment I saw... hurt in his eyes? His face quickly returned to its cold stern look. He looks at Rose and motions for her to leave.
"You'd be dead if it weren't for me," He said in a whisper.
"No... I'd rather be dead because of you." The hurt returned in his eyes. How could a man so awful like him even have feelings? He glances at me once more before he leaves and closes the door behind him. I allow myself to finally slouch a bit and take a deep breath. I turn to look out the extremely small window in my room.
Happy birthday to me...
