Chapter 2 - Heartbreak

Dylan's POV

Days before she woke up I was told by doctor's that she could have memory problems but I had told myself as long as she was awake and alive I would be happy and now she is awake and alive and she broke my heart with her first sentence she asked me who I was and where Carl was, Carl of all people how could she remember that twat more than me, we were happy and now she has no idea who I am and that has broken my heart but I won't give up she's my love I can't think of a life without her so if I have to start all over again with her then so be it. When I left her room after going through what I could with her to try to help her to remember I asked the doctor if this would be permanent and he said no but it could take months and it could be very difficult but as long as I knew it wasn't permanent then I could deal with it.

I sat in my car for about 15 minutes just contemplating what had happened and crying then I pulled myself together and drove home. I pulled up outside our home and went inside the dogs instantly jumped on me then looked behind me looking for Raven and I fell apart again and they snuggled me and I patted them saying "it's ok mammy will be home soon and we will be a family again but for now I need to walk you and then sort the spare room for the inlaws" and that's what I did.

Having things to do kept my thoughts from what was happening and helped. I had just sat down when my phone went off a text I checked it was Tyler.

Tyler

Hi Dylan, just thought I would drop you a line to see how you were doing? T

Dylan

Not really can you come round and bring Charlie with you? D

Tyler

Yeah no bother give me half an hour ok. T

Dylan

Ok. D

And then I sat down with the dogs and tried to relax I must have managed it as I fell asleep and was woke by a knocking on the door which I opened to find both Charlie and Tyler standing there "oh come in sorry it took me a while to answer the door I fell asleep" Charlie just smiled and hugged him saying "you probably needed it let's face it you haven't really been sleeping properly have you" and then she walked in followed by Tyler who just rolled his eyes and hit me on my shoulder and pulled me in the house with him.

"So what's happened? Is Raven ok?" Charlie asked as heading towards the sofa and sitting down. "Well she's awake" Dylan replied "holy shit that's great. When can I see her?" "Soon maybe today but there is a problem" "what's up what's wrong?" Charlie was getting upset now so Tyler sat next to her and hugged her and then looked at Dylan and said "come on Dylan what gives she's been waiting for this day just like you" "yes I know but it's hard to say but she doesn't remember me so the chances are she won't remember you. Well I know she doesn't remember us she's got short term memory loss" "what no she can't" and with that Charlie fell apart. Tyler cuddled her and stroked her back to sooth her and eventually she managed to gasp "how long will it last? Will she eventually get back to normal?" "yes but it could take weeks or maybe months" after she had calmed down and she pulled away from Tyler she realised I was sitting and tears were running down my cheeks and she was kneeling in front of me in a split second "oh Dylan I am so sorry" was all she said as she wrapped her arms around me and hugged me.

The phone then went so I composed myself and answered before the machine clicked in "hello" Dylan said "hi it's Mary I just thought I would let you know we have landed" "oh yeah I am sorry I forgot I am on my way I will be there by the time you get through security ok" "yeah not a problem George went to the toilet and we still have the bags to collect" "ok I am leaving now be there soon" and then he put down the phone. "I have to go and pick up Ravens parents from the airport. Please wait then we can go to the hospital ok" "yeah sure see you when you get back" and with that I got up and left and headed to the airport.

When I got there they were just walking out the doors I was in Roscoe more room so I beeped and waved and they headed towards me. I got out the car "hello Mary and George I am so sorry again for not being here on time I was at the hospital seeing Raven and then some friends of ours came round and I lost track of the time" Mary just smiled and said "it's fine Dylan and how is my daughter doing?" "She's awake which is great" I said but she could see something was wrong and said "but? What's up Dylan?" "She has short term memory loss she can't remember me or her friends" "oh no well we will see what we can do when's the next visiting?" "In about 45 minutes" "ok well we need to unpack so is there any other visiting today?" "Yes later tonight at 8pm" "ok can we go to that one then?" "Yes not a problem I was hoping to take her friends this afternoon if that's ok with you" "yes it's fine" and with that we got in the car and headed home.

It was a half hour trip back bad traffic and then we went in, I introduced them to Tyler and Charlie and showed them to their room then went downstairs "ok they are fine with going at 8pm so are you ready" with that we all trooped off to the hospital.

After an emotional visit we came out and sat in the waiting area and contemplated what had happened and I cried again and so did Charlie but then we pulled ourselves together and I dropped them off and headed home. I was so happy though she had kissed my hand maybe it wouldn't take as long as we thought but I wanted to keep the kiss between me and her no one else needed to know. When I eventually got home through the traffic it was 5.30 and I walked in to find Mary, George and the dogs sound asleep on the sofa so I took the chair and set my alarm for 6.30 so I could grab something to eat and go back to the hospital with Mary and George and within 2 mins of me setting the alarm I was asleep.
