"It's been a full year since we started dating." Hank says, sipping at his coffee. He and Connor sat in the break room and were holding a casual conversation. "You know what that means."
Connor stares at him as if waiting for him to continue but he doesn't. He hated when Hank did that. Expecting Connor to be fully aware of every human custom when a little over a year was still a rather short period of time for him to have been activated. There was still so much he needed to learn. To catch up on.
"No." Connor responds, leaning in curiously. "What does it mean?"
"Date night." Hank tells him, a smile curling at his lips.
"But we already go on dates. What makes a year significant?" He asks, still looking for a proper answer.
Hank just gives Connor a look. "It's been a year, Connor." The detective tells him. "It's kind of a thing humans do to celebrate the time they've been together." He says with a shrug of his shoulder, sitting his coffee down on the table. "It's called an anniversary. We don't have to though if you don't wanna."
Connor's already smiling some at this idea. Humans were truly enigmas sometimes but there was no doubt that they always managed to come up with something interesting or creative to celebrate specific festivities. That was something he could appreciate as an android who was still in the process of fully grasping the concept of creativity. Markus had showed him art but he was no good at it. He just wasn't as imaginative as the other RK model and he couldn't help it. He was designed specifically to be logical and analytical of any given situation using numbers and data — something wildly uncreative.
Connor nods. "I want to. It sounds like an interesting experience. What will make this date different from the others?" He asks hopefully. Did Hank have something planned? Was there a surprise involved?
Hank had absolutely nothing planned. He'd considered the idea on the fly and figured that going out would be enough but now that he thought about it, this would be Connor's very first anniversary which made it special. He, as Connor's significant other, had an obligation to make it special even if nothing had been planned prior. The older man hadn't celebrated an anniversary of any kind in a long while; back when he and his ex-wife were still together. He could vaguely recall exchanging gifts with her when the date rolled around every year. But would Connor appreciate a gift like the average human? He didn't strike Hank as a materialistic type. In fact, he was sure that material items were useless to the android. Even still, he wanted to get him something. There must have been something he wanted. Something out there that he could appreciate.
"Uhh... you'll see." Hank says before bringing the coffee back up to his lips so he doesn't have to continue that sentence. He keeps it as vague as possible so as not to give away the fact that he had no idea what he was going to do.
Connor notices that Hank's pulse has quickened when he'd asked him about what this particular date would consist of and he can only conclude that whatever it was, it was great. Why else would the man suddenly display instinctive traits of excitement?
"I assume we'll be going out after work then." Connor smiles, his fingers tapping anxiously at that tabletop. The sudden anticipation had him fidgeting. "I'll find something formal to wear that'll better suit the occasion. You should too." He tells the Lieutenant before getting up out of his chair and heading out of the break room.
Hank watches him, silently regretting playing up the occasion like it was a once in a lifetime deal. He didn't know what exactly Connor expected but it wouldn't be anything too grand. He just wasn't that type of guy. Despite this, he makes it a point in his mind to make it as special as possible for the android. Connor's excitement gives him a reason to want to make it memorable occasion.
