CHAPTER 4: FOREVER MEANS NOTHING

I finally return to my part of the camp where my familiar little cot sits there waiting for me. I plop down onto it, and wince, once again reminded that this is not my fluffy bed at home. Home. I scoff. I have no home. I gather my knees close to my chest, and I once again remember my father’s horrendous end. I squeeze my eyes shut. I will not be weak anymore. I wipe the tears from my cheeks. I will not let anybody trample on me and make me less than I am. I stand and find the infinity symbol laying flat on my chest. He had promised that our friendship would last forever. Forever means nothing. I rip the necklace from my neck and throw it, not at the wall, but through the membrane that separates the living from the dead, where I never have to see it again. Where he belongs.

I head to the station where all the course graduates gather, scanning the assortment of preternaturals as I go, I find a suitable corner to be quiet in. I don’t smile at anyone who passes by. I have zero reason to. Most of the preternaturals have separated into little groups across the room, all talking and laughing with each other. I frown. A little girl who looks around 9 years old waddles up to me. “Hey! Do you want to play a game with us?” I stare at her for a second, and then shake my head. She grabs my arm and pulls me away from my corner anyways. “Come on it'll be fun!” She giggles. I don’t try to resist. I don’t have the energy to.


The little girl leads me to one of the circles of people. Three other girls stand tall, all looking around my age. “Hi, I’m Rachel.” A voice says behind me. I whip around. There stands the inferno with red hair, still wearing a skimpy outfit. “So, basically the game is kill the freak who almost murdered me.” She says lowly. I can already feel the curtain of heat emanating off of her. I look around at all the people, some are already crowding over, eager for a fight. I don’t want to fight her again. In order to be strong I know I can’t abuse the power I have. So, I take my only option. I run
