Pack Mentality

His dad may have been joking when he called himself, Brady, and Leo a pack when they were small and in daycare, but Leo sure took it to heart and feelings are contagious. Brady couldn't explain it, but it was like a rope was bound to his spine, the other ends tied to Leo's and Austin's. A thin, but strong rope, coated in cemented bedrock.

Brady still was pretty sure he himself was the alpha, but decided to let his dad believe otherwise. Charity and whatnot. Which meant his brotherly instincts concerned Lily and her brother, while not as prominent as they are for his own siblings but still strong.

He wasn't exactly a shy guy, but he didn't go out of his way to meet others outside their small class. On the other side of the coin, Leo made it way too easy to make every friend he could, even people he knew he probably wouldn't see again. Lily was friendly to them too by proxy, but mostly stuck to just Kandy and Kat.

And as such, Brady kept the friends he made in daycare. Except Nina, who was banned from stepping foot within 150 yards of the house. Well, exiled completely no matter how she got in, a specification his dad made sure to make considering who her own dad was.

Getting her to come along on yearly camping trips was more of a hassle than it should be. It was always useful to have her along, especially when things went wrong. So basically every time they went.

It was one of those trips where Brady came as close to murdering someone since they'd moved from further south, away from 'Uncle' Lam. He swore it was one minute. Just for one minute, his back was turned to mess with the grill and he looked back to see a sister missing. Even worse, it was his youngest.

He signaled to Luna to deal with the erupting fire and abandoned the site to scour the woods. He may have lost his ears and tail for a while, but his heightened senses never ceased, and they only grew stronger over the years after regaining them.

He separated the others' scents from Kandy's, marshmallows and wool, and followed it off the beaten gravel path. The farther into the trees he got, the more the unsettled he grew.

That feeling only got worse when her scent suddenly mixed in with two strange ones. Not a moment later did he hear the voices they belonged to.

Two guys, one significantly taller than the other, both definitely way taller than the visibly scared girl they towered over. They both smelled like decreased wood paneling; out of town jerks compared to the charcoal and lake water scent of his own town. Matching black and white school jackets as well, the only difference being the taller one had his sleeves ripped up.

The shorter one held her drawstring bag in his hand, dangling it in front of her with a viped grip and a grim sneer slapped on his face. His eyes were pointed and beaded almost like a beetle's.

Kandy curled in on herself, shaking on her feet and her hands clutched to her chest. No not clutched, Brady realized, rubbing together. One of her hands was seared red and dots of tears pricked at her eyes.

"What was that?" The taller guy said, drips of condensation in his voice. Strands of red hair fell in front of his eyes and he flicked them back dramatically. "I didn't quite hear you, little rabbit."

"My-my-," Kandy choked out, "my family is here. They'll-"

Drawstring guy laughed. "They'll do what? Your big old bad siblings are gonna beat us up?" He pursed his lips with his mocking one.

Kandy sniffed. "Y-yes."

Another laugh from freaking ripped sleeves guy. "Oh little rabbit, I'd love to see them try."

A split second later, he screamed and grabbed his arm. Drops of blood fell to the grass and his eyes widened, looking around at the knife now lodged into a tree beside him. Brady strolled up to them, as calm as he could be, only feeling an ounce of peace when he saw Kandy's eyes light up.
