Manchester, New Hampshire. That was the current location that had displayed itself across my screen. A feeling so shallow became present in my chest. It hadn't reached my heart just yet but it was in route to the destination. There were no thoughts, there were no feelings, just action. I hadn't even closed out Instagram before I grabbed my keys and rushed my way out the door. The walk to the car was like walking the plank. My heart beat quicker with each step I took. Once I reached the car, I pressed the button to unlock the driver door and started the car as soon as my foot connected with the pedal. Pulling off, all the good and bad memories swarmed my head."How could he?", was all I could think.
It hadn't taken me long to drive to the neighboring apartment complex. I sped over the speed humps not really caring about the conditions of my expensive tires. A spike of relief shot through me like a bullet seeing his 2021 Toyota Camery sitting in its normal parking spot. Still, it wasn't enough for me. I had to see for myself. I parked my car in front of the main patio door and made my way to the front door. Thanks to the sun, I couldn't see anything through the reflecting glass door. I could see that the patch lock was still in place from the last time I was here...untouched. I tried my luck with the front door...locked. Damn.
I took a deep breath and raised my hand in a fist and knocked on the door. No response, the feeling of worry caused me to knock again and again and again. Still, no sounds of movement, and no unlocking in progress. Maybe he was asleep, so I reached in my pocket and pulled out my iphone 12 and dialed his number. There was no answer to any of the 6 calls I made. Walking down the pathway of shame towards my car, I took a final look back at the apartment, nothing. This is real, it was true. He was gone.
