"That was a long day", said Gabe as we walked into the house that night. It was well past dinnertime and heading towards bedtime.
"But a good day', I said as I took off my coat and boots. I hung up my coat in the closet and headed for the stairs. "I thought I would never get the chance to put on my fuzzy pyjamas."
"Which ones will you wear tonight?" Gabe asked with a smile. "I have a few requests."
I laughed. "Your requests usually end up with me wearing no pyjamas at all rather than a specific pair."
"True. I do love seeing you out of your pyjamas best of all."
I walked to the closet and looked on the shelf, pulling a pair of pyjamas out. I walked into the bathroom and took the day off my face, brushed out my hair, brushed my teeth and put on my pyjamas. I walked out. Gabe smiled. "How appropriate!" he said. I was wearing my plain black pyjama bottoms and the top that said 'get up. Kick ass. Repeat.' "We certainly kicked ass today."
"I know, and I'm very proud of it. I'm glad that Daisy is going home to a safe house tonight, but I'm even happier that Theresa is also going home to a safe house. According to Daisy's play, Theresa has been abused both verbally and physically for quite some time. Theresa said he was starting his abusive practices on Daisy now that he doesn't have the sexual release of rape."
"We got him, and it's all thanks to you. We wouldn't have been nearly as successful if it wasn't for your interviews."
"I taped everything. Addison will be able to get a copy of the tape over to you tomorrow and the transcripts by the end of the week. Do you want me to put a rush on it?"
"Preferably, yes. I'm hoping to use the information when I go to his bail hearing, so anything you can get to me before then would be wonderful."
"I'll see what Addison can do. Not only will I have transcripts of my conversation with Daisy, but I also have the conversation with Theresa taped. I'll be able to get that transcript to you later in the week as well."
"That would be helpful."
"I'd like to go into the office early tomorrow morning so that I have time to prepare my reports before the day starts."
"Sure thing, darlin'." He walked around behind me and started to rub my shoulders.
"That report will be useful when you go to his bail hearing."
"Yes, it will." He continued to rub my body, his hands drifting down from my shoulders in a massage that was quickly turning sensual. He kissed the back of my neck and my nipples tightened in anticipation.
Despite my physical reaction, I could not concentrate. "Not now", I said, shrugging off his touch. "I'm still too wound up about Daisy. I keep seeing her act out her rape with the Barbies."
"Darlin', you need to leave your work at the office."
"I can't switch off this one as fast as I normally can. It's hard when there are kids involved. This is one of the reasons I've chosen to work with adults. I can't handle child abuse very well."
"Yes, but this is one of the reasons that we do what we do. To keep the kids safe. To make sure they have a voice. If it weren't for you, Daisy and Theresa would be going home to a house that was dominated by their father. A house in which they were yelled at and hit. A house where they were regularly raped. Because of you they're going home to a house free of danger."
"There was just something in this case that got to me."
"Truthfully, there was something in this case that got to me as well", said Gabe. "That's why I asked you to get involved in the first place. However, you now have to take solace in the fact that we got him. That you'll do your report first thing tomorrow morning, and your report will be used in his bail hearing to try to keep him in jail where he belongs. We'll look after Daisy and Theresa. They'll be okay, and it's all because of you."
