Coraline was only a teenager who had suffered from schizophrenia. Her parents were drug abusers before she left home. While she was in her late teens, she became addicted to various types of narcotics which triggered her schizophrenia, bringing back her childhood memories that she had obsessed over and created a new world which being the other dimension her ‘other family’ lived in.

She had a pet cat that didn’t really like her but she always looked after him and she would always talk to it. This explains the talking cat in the book that was very stubborn and sometimes quite rude to Coraline.
She never knew what her parents were doing that is why, in her imagination, her mother was away so much that she was almost never there and when Coraline tried to see her father in real life, he would always make excuses about work.
When Coraline discovered that her parents were missing after she had apparently “found the mysterious dimension”, she called the police and they had told her that her parents were in jail. That was why she imagined that they were trapped in the mirror. When she had first found her other family, she was actually in the hospital after her mother had found her on the ground in her room and Coraline wouldn’t wake up. Her mother called the police and the ambulance and Coraline was taken to the hospital. The police searched their house and had found many drugs even in Coraline’s room which they had thought that her parents were giving to her and that is how her parents went to jail.

Miss Forcible and Miss Spink, who were actually younger than Coraline but she imagined them to be older, fatter and uglier because she was jealous of them, had taken care of her at the hospital and had taken her home after the doctors had thought she would be in a coma for the rest of her life. She had woken up and it had made her schizophrenia even worse resulting her to constantly withdraw from reality more often and in longer periods of time. Miss Forcible and Miss Spink had thought she was asleep so they would leave her alone.

She became very depressed and delusional and she sewed big black buttons onto her eyes. Coraline became very scared and began to take drugs once again and she took so many that it had knocked her out which had aggravated her schizophrenia. This was when Coraline had imagined herself to go back to her other family to try to free her parents because in reality, she had felt guilty but also felt that her parents had abandoned her but she didn’t want to be angry at them. As a result, she had imagined her other parents to be evil so that she would hate her other parents rather than her real parents.

The three ghosts represented the friends that she never had and which is why she had so many toys. Ghosts were not real, just like her friends and she imagined them because she was lonely and her parents would never let her make new friends.

The bee incident was actually when her and her father went for a walk and they had run into some drug dealers and her father hadn’t paid for the last batch they gave him and so they beat him and Coraline’s dad told her to run away. She had imagined bees because they were in a gang and they wore black and yellow.

In the part that she escaped and was out of the other dimension, Mr Bobo had taken her to the hospital because she hadn’t woken up for weeks and so they discovered that she was in a coma and eventually died. The scene where she was dreaming a nice picnic with the children was supposed to represent her being at peace at last.
