"Apply Now?"

My mouse hovered over the little blue button. This is it. One click and I've officially applied to college. I was unnecessarily nervous about it even though I already had the scholarship, and I met with the school. Basically guaranteed a spot, yet for some reason my palms were sweaty and I was hesitant about sending in the paperwork.

"Hey, sweetie are you all ready for school tomorrow?" My mother asks rather excitedly, her sudden entrance causing me to jump and click down on the mouse. Well then, I guess that's that. Closing my laptop I turn to her.

"Yes, mom, all ready to go," I say with a tired smile.

"Oh, honey I just can't believe it's your senior year. Soon you'll be off to college and starting your own life. Where has my baby girl gone?" She cries getting teary-eyed. I swear she's more excited about this year than I am.

"Mom you know I'll always be your little girl. Just from farther away." I tease trying to lighten the mood a little. She's been an absolute mess this summer with helping me get ready to move away and visiting schools. Unfortunately, the best school I could find was halfway across the country.

"Don't be a smarty pants," my mom teases with a sad smile, "Now go to bed. It's your last first day tomorrow and we both know you don't want dark circles for such an important day." With that bit of advice she gives me a kiss on the cheek and leaves, of course leaving the door open a crack. Sliding my laptop to the side I get out of bed and push my door shut with a sigh. Every time. Is it that hard to close the door all the way? I double check that my school supplies are in order before I turn off my light and slip into bed.

Here's hoping for a quick, easy senior year...

I look around the doctors office, my eyes only finding posters with long words and sad looking people. I grip my mom's hand tighter and swallow, trying to get rid of the dry feeling in my mouth. The door opens and a tall man in a white coat approaches my mother and I. He starts to say a lot of long, scary sounding words to my mom, speaking in a bit of a hushed tone. I feel something wet drip onto my hand and look up to see my mama crying. I glare at the tall man, angry at him for making her cry. They both turn to look at me as my mom pulls me onto her lap. Scary Doctor Man sits down in his wheelie chair and pulls the bar so he's eye-level with me.

"Allison my name is Dr. Tucker. Your mommy brought you here because she says you've hit your head very hard playing on the play structure. Can you answer a few questions for me?" Slowly I nod my head, still wary of the strange man. He continues to ask me a bunch of questions, like how I'm feeling and what I remember from my day care trip to the park.

"I remember running towards the big spinny thing on the ground," I start to tell him, "and when I started to play on it stupid Johnny walked up and said he wanted to play on it too. I told him no cause I got here first, he should've ran faster than me. He kept trying to pull me off and then he gave a big push and it started to spin really fast. He wouldn't stop and kept on pushing me and then I let go. I did on accident! It was going really fast and I couldn't hold onto it. And then I heard mommy yelling at Jenny for not watching me and when I opened my eyes I was in our car."

"I see, okay, I think that will be all for today." He nodded along with my story and even wrote some of it down. He gave instructions to Mom and told her to keep an eye on me before letting us out of the room.

The blaring of my alarm pulled me out of my dreams and brought me back to today. Groggily dragging myself out of bed I hit my alarm causing a silence to wash over my room. Just how I like it. Shuffling across the hall to my bathroom I begin to freshen up for school.

"Allison are you up? Don't want to be late on your first day!" My mum excitedly yells from downstairs. Yelling a quick response over my shoulder I go back into my room to get dressed. Walking downstairs I am met with my mother, standing in her robe with a cup of coffee and her phone out, ready for pictures.

"Mom, no," I groan, "No back to school pictures, please?"

"Don't even try, these are my last of your first day pictures, you will not take this away from me. Now put those puppy dog eyes away and get outside." Heaving a sigh at my failed attempt to get out of her pictures I put my stuff down in my car and follow my mum around the yard while she finds the 'perfect' spot to capture her photo. My mom proceeds to make weird faces in an attempt to get a real smile out of me before she lets out an exasperated sigh.

"God you're impossible. Can't I get one nice photo?" She snickers to herself and holds her phone up again, smiles at me and says "Everybody say penis!!"

"Oh my god, Mom!" I choke before starting to laugh away with her.

"Got it." she giggles, "You're almost and adult Allison, 'cheese' just won't work like it used to. Now hurry up before your late." she chides before giving me a hug and a kiss and sending me on my way. I get into my car and buckle up, shaking my head. That woman really is something else. Giving her a quick wave as I pull out of the driveway I begin the dreaded journey back to school.
