The dark ocean crashed over and over as they sat on the edge of the swaying dock.
"It's... it's weird how in a moment everything can change" their head was lowered as they stared at their twiddling thumbs "It was strange, the sensation of free-falling even though I knew I was still-"
They took a deep shuddering breath forcing their throat open to continue.
"- and they keep talking to me.. The voices never stop. I hear everything."
"You do?"
"... yes. I've never stopped hearing them."
"Who do you hear?"
"My parents. Mainly my mom as she sings- sang to me. I hear my brothers, both telling me to turn down my music, that classical was boring. They all talk to me, everyone does. I hear him when he would comfort me as I cried for hours. I still cry..." they whispered fading into the ocean.
"Why do you cry?"
"I have no one. I hear them all. But I also hear them as they whisper breathing down my neck, making me turn every which way, no longer feeling safe. I don't feel safe-"
Another shuddering breath as the first tears escapes their red-rimmed eyes.
"-I don't feel SAFE!" choking out the last word in a scream they stood up hugging their arms around themselves, protecting their body and turned to look to who they were talking to. No one was in sight, and as they sank to their knees hugging their chest they realized they had heard them but not out loud. Never out loud.
"What happened?"
"They caught my body, they captured it and they left my soul behind and all I ever hear and all I have now are the voices."
"But sweetie we are all here."
They knew the voice was right as they crawled to the edge of the dock and looked over. Floating there in the darkness were the only voices they'd ever loved. Sticking a hand in the harsh waters they fell forward in the ice-cold sea.
"What are you doing!" the voices screamed.
They smiled up through the dark water "Finding the voices."
As they closed their eyes they felt hands pulling them to the surface but it was too late. They had joined the voices.
